Doug Coby has winning the inaugural Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup in mind heading to Claremont Motorsports Park this Friday night. Coby will return to the seat of the No. 7NY for Tommy Baldwin Racing, as the Whelen Modified Tour competes in the Clash at Claremont 150.

In his sixth start of the season for Tommy Baldwin Racing, Coby will look to break the tie with Matt Hirschman at the top of the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup standings and earn Baldwin and his team a $5,000 championship prize. Coby is also in contention for the Consistency Bonus as part of the Cup, which awards the winning driver $800 for the best average finish over the three Cup events. Currently, Coby has an average finish of 3.0, trailing just Matt Hirschman, who has a 2.5.

Baldwin’s team is also leading the Whelen Modified Tour owners championship standings with nine races complete in the 16-race schedule.

“There is a lot at stake this weekend,” Coby said. “Claremont is a track I’ve only been to once in my life, so there are going to be some challenges, but I don’t know a lot of other drivers who have run there other than a few. Our plan is to go there and get a good feel for the car in the practice session and have a car that lasts longer than everyone else in the race. With only one set of tires, it’s something you have to manage to be there at the end.”

Friday’s schedule includes a full night of racing at Claremont, headlined by the Clash at Claremont 150 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The Six Shooters, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks and Street Stocks of the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Racing Series will also join the show. Whelen Modified Tour practice will roll from 3:30-4:30 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 7 p.m. The green flag for the Clash at Claremont 150 is slated for 8:45 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV for those who can’t make it to the track. Tickets will be available at the gate for those in the area.
