STAFFORD – Adam Gray had a perfect month of June in the Late Model division at Stafford Speedway, scoring four victories in four events.

Friday night he was glad to stray from another month of perfection.

Gray had finished second in the first three Late Model events of July at Stafford. That streak came to an end in a good way for Fearn Friday.

Gray erased Darrell Keane’s massive lead and went to the front on lap 27 to win the 30-lap Late Model feature Friday at Stafford.

It was the fifth victory of the season for Gray, of Belchertown, Mass.

“Just what an awesome night,” Gray said.

Keane, of Enfield, was second and Kevin Gambacorta of Ellington third.

By the time Gray got to second place on lap 10, Keane had built up a 1.9 second lead out front. By lap 22 Gray had cut that lead to half a second. On lap 25 Gray was all over Keane’s bumper. On lap 27 Gray got under Keane through turn two. The pair went side by side down the backstretch with Gray taking the lead for good off of turn four.

“Our car stayed consistent,” Gray said. “I could see he was loosening up a little bit. I didn’t think we were going to have enough time but it worked out for us and here we are.”

Said Keane: “This thing was used up. We used all the tires, we used everything. This is one of those bittersweet things, I wanted to beat him that bad tonight. We had the good starting position. But hey, we’ll take it. Second place, keep building from there. Third last week, third the week before and second this week, we can just keep going forward from there.”
