Doug Coby Leads Whelen Modified Tour Practice At Thompson Sunoco World Series

THOMPSON – Doug Coby’s chase for a fourth NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory in 2022 started the right way Saturday at Thompson Speedway. 

The six-time series champion led the way in practice Saturday for Sunday’s Phoenix Communications 150 at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson. 

Coby toured the .625-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.941 seconds. 

Coby was third in the division’s first visit to Thompson this season on Aug. 18. In 65 series starts at Thompson since 2002 Coby has six victories and 26 top-five finishes. 

Coby will be making his 11th Whelen Modified Tour start of the season Sunday and his second for the team he owns. He has made nine starts for Tommy Baldwin Racing.  

Coby’s teammate with the Tommy Baldwin Jr. owned team – Mike Christopher Jr. – was second in practice Saturday with a fast lap of 18.970 seconds. 

Ronnie Williams was third fastest during the one hour and 15 minute practice at 19.062 seconds. Austin Beers (19.072 seconds) was fourth. 

Ronnie Williams led the three drivers battling for the 2022 driver’s championship. Silk was fifth fastest at 19.078 seconds. 

Silk and Justin Bonsignore sit tied for second in the standings, three points behind Jon McKennedy. Bonsignore, who is looking for his third consecutive driver’s championship and fourth title overall, was seventh fastest (19.086 seconds). McKennedy was 19th of 24 cars in the practice session at 19.282 seconds.
