Ronnie Williams Wins Pole In Whelen Modified Tour Qualifying At Thompson

THOMPSON – Ronnie Williams carried a good evening on Friday at Thompson Speedway to quality afternoon back at the track on Saturday. 

Williams was victorious in the 75-lap Modified Racing Series event Friday on opening night of Sunoco World Series weekend at Thompson. 

Saturday he keep the good times rolling when it was all about setting good times. 

Willams scored the pole in qualifying Saturday afternoon for Sunday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Phoenix Communications 150 at Thompson. 

Williams toured the .625-mile Thompson Speedway oval with a fast lap of 19.073 seconds. It was the third career Whelen Modified Tour pole for Williams and his first since 2018. 

Championship contender Ron Silk was second fastest in qualifying at 19.147 seconds. 

Patrick Emerling was third fastest to set the lineup at 19.188 seconds. 

Six-time series champion Doug Coby (19.193 seconds) was fourth in qualifying. Craig Lutz, winner of the last two Whelen Modified Tour events at Thompson, was fifth fastest (19.207 seconds. 

Ryan Preece, Mike Christopher Jr., Justin Bonsignore, Austin Beers and Kyle Bonsignore rounded out the top-10 in qualifying respectively. 

With two events remaining in 2022, Silk and Justin Bonsignore sit tied for second in the standings, three points behind Jon McKennedy, in the chase for the series driver’s championship. 

McKennedy (19.421 second) will start 17th in the 24-car field. Bonsignore is looking for his third consecutive driver’s championship and fourth overall. Silk is looking for his second title. He won his first in 2011. McKennedy is trying to win his first title.
