NASCAR Hall of Famer to race full-time in SRX for 3rd consecutive season

Management from the SRX Series announced Thursday that series founder and ownership partner, NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart, will compete full-time with the series in 2023.

It will mark the third consecutive year that Stewart, a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and the 1997 IndyCar champion, will run full-time with the series.

“I’m excited to race full-time in SRX for a third straight season and compete for another championship,” Stewart said. “I’m really proud of what we’ve all built, and the quality of drivers we’ve assembled for 2023 is a testament to SRX’s success, and the passion and excitement we’ve earned from fans in the short-track community. We’re looking forward to another summer of sold-out racetracks and can’t wait to bring Thursday Night Thunder back to ESPN.”

Stewart won the inaugural SRX Championship in 2021 and was fourth in the series standings last year.

“To have Tony Stewart back for his third year in SRX is huge,” SRX CEO Don Hawk said. “Tony has an immeasurable impact on the SRX brand, racing product and the ESPN Broadcast. Tony is really involved during the season and off season. He makes me think deeply about the product on the track, the driver selections, racetracks, and race format. Tony is a fierce competitor first and foremost, and never lets his ownership position in SRX interfere with a good decision or the racing product. It’s not often you can say you have 3-time NASCAR Champion driver, multiple series car owner, current NHRA driver, NASCAR Hall of Famer who’s not just your boss, but your friend.”

The 2023 season will see the SRX Series events move from Saturday nights to Thursday nights. Events will be broadcast last for six consecutive Thursday’s on ESPN under the Thursday Night Thunder branding.

The 2023 SRX season kicks off on July 13 at Stafford Speedway. It will mark the third consecutive year the series has run at Stafford.

The division makes its first appearance at Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT on July 20. Other venues include Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va. (July 27), Berlin Raceway in Grand Rapids, Mich. (Aug. 3), Eldora Speedway in New Weston, Oh. (Aug. 10) and Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. (Aug. 17).
