The 2020 SK Light Modified champion at Stafford Speedway looks poised to make a run at another title in 2023.

After a year away from the division, Brian Sullivan has returned to the SK Light Modified division on fire in 2023.

Sullivan, of Tolland, scored his second victory in three events this year in the 40-lap SK Light Modified Double Down special event Friday at Stafford.

Sullivan won the season opening event for the division on May 13 and was seventh in last week’s feature.

“We had a good car last week, we were just a little too free,” Sullivan said. “We made some adjustments here. We knew we had to be snugged up for tonight’s race so we snugged it up a little extra and she was good. Got a little tight there at the end.”

George Bessette Jr. of Danbury was second and Jason Chapman of Ellington third.

Sullivan went by Nick Anglace for the lead on lap 12 and never trailed again.

“We got to the spot early,” Sullivan said. “That was the key, to get the lead early and try to take control.”

Bessette went by Chapman for second on lap 28 and cut deeply into Sullivan’s lead over the final 10 laps.

“I saw George coming in the mirror so the last five laps I had to drive my butt off,” Sullivan said. “I knew he was coming.”
