THOMPSON – What looked like a runaway victory for Ryan Waterman turned into a surprise win for Corey Fanning Thursday at Thompson Speedway.

A green-white-checkered finish allowed Fanning to score a last lap pass for the lead to win the 30-lap Limited Sportsman feature.

Jason Chicolas of Sutton, Mass. was second and Waterman of Danielson third.

Waterman had long checked out from the field when caution flew for the spinning car of Tim Poulin on the final lap. On the first lap of the green white checkered restart, Waterman and Larry Barnett ran side-by-side for three quarters of the lap. In turn four the lead back got jumbled up with Chicolas and Fanning jumping into the fight for the win.

In turn one Waterman got hit and pushed up the track. As Waterman tried to save his sliding car, Fanning and Chicolas got under him, with Fanning winning the sprint to the checkered.

“That’s a prime example of right place, right time,” Fanning said. “Those guys did their homework, they were definitely faster in the long run. We were just in the right place at the right time.”

Said Chicolas: “I don’t know if I got hit back, but my car took off when I got into [turn one]. … I didn’t mean to hit Ryan even though he’s hit me a few times for the win.”

Waterman saved his car from spinning on the last lap and held on for a podium spot.

“I would have been fine if [Tim Poulin] knew how to keep his car straight,” Waterman said. “Maybe he’ll figure that out one year. I don’t really have anything else to say.”

Nick Johnson of Rehoboth, Mass. dominated on the way to victory in the 25-lap Late Model feature.

Matt Lowinski-Loh of Milford, Mass. was second and Andrew Molleur of Shelton third.

Ben Seitz of Bourne, Mass. topped the field in the 30-lap New England SuperModified Series feature.

Danny Bowes of Byfield, Mass. was second and Rob Summers of Manchester third.

Kyle Wing of Marshfield, Mass. won the 15-lap Mini Stock feature. Kevin Moore of Moosup was second and Glynn Roy of Sterling third.
