Tight Standings Lead Into Preston’s Kia Fireworks Spectacular Sunday At Thunder Road

(Press release from Thunder Road International Speedbowl)

After what can easily be considered one of the best Thursday night racing programs of the 2023 season, the Thunder Road faithful are hard at work to repair and rejuvenate their trusty machines in preparation for the Preston’s Kia Fireworks Spectacular this Sunday, July 30th. Although Thursday’s racing action was hot on the track, the hair-raising point standing changes are putting even more pressure on teams and drivers with their quick turn-around into Sunday’s events.

After rolling the outside groove last night to claim his third Vermont Governor’s Cup, Scott Dragon is not only the first repeat winner in the Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models this season, but he has also jumped headlong into a tight top-four battle in the standings. Stephen Donahue continues to lead Nick Sweet by just one point with defending champion Chris Pelkey and Dragon in tow, the top-four separated by just six-points. Returning to the weekly 50-lap sprint on Sunday, we’ll have to wait and see who takes the next edge on the others.

The only championship division not to have a major shift in the standings is the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers. Defending champion Sam Caron was able to grow his lead on Jason Pelkey with Pelkey unable to charge through the field on Thursday. Still in the hunt, Kyle Streeter, Brandon Gray and Rich Lowrey continue to prove consistency is key as they hope for Caron to bobble with the season on the downhill slope.

Another driver proving consistency, and a little luck, will lead to high places, Northfield’s James Dopp has overtaken Cam Powers’ stand atop the rk Miles Street Stock standings by just one point. The opening day winner has kept his blue Cavalier in the mix all season long, setting up a battle with Powers ready to roll through to the end as the sophomore driver is far from backing down from the challenge.

Neal Foster became the 8th different winner in as many events for the Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors on Thursday with fans looking for the 9th different victor in the ultimate entry-level division this Sunday under the Northstar Fireworks display.

The Nation’s Site of Excitement, Barre’s Thunder Road returns to racing action this Sunday, July 30 for the Preston’s Kia Fireworks Spectacular. Alongside the Maplewood/Irving Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, rk Miles Street Stocks and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors, East Montpelier’s Northstar Fireworks will supply the biggest fireworks display in Central Vermont following the feature racing events!
