Thompson 150 Presented By FloSports On Tap For Midweek Thompson Speedway Thriller

Thompson Speedway is ready to roll once again this Wednesday, August 16th for the first of two visits from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The Thompson 150 presented by FloSports is set up for another classic open-wheeled barn-burner for the touring modified powerhouses while the Thompson Speedway local divisions prepare to duke it out in front of a jam-packed, midweek crowd.

The SK Light Modifieds have made 2023 their season at the Big-T. Following their annual double-feature special on July 26th, Salem, Connecticut’s Alexander Pearl proved smart driving is the best driving and carried his immaculate #7 machine to O’Reilly Auto Parts victory lane in both 30-lap features. In doing so, Pearl now leads the championship standings over a tied Tyler Chapman and John O’Sullivan, both 20-points back.

So far, the 2023 Thompson Late Model season has been under the command of Rehoboth, Massachusetts’-own Nick Johnson. The 2018 track champion took down his first career Thompson Speedway Late Model win in June and backed it up with a second checkered flag on July 26th. The Late Models continue to put on stellar side-by-side racing in their 25-lap features on the highbanks and this Wednesday will be no different as young-guns Andrew Molleur, Devin Deshaies and Jake Johnson look to steal a win on Thompson 150 night.

Danielson’s Ryan Waterman broke Corey Fanning’s win streak last time out and currently sits just five points below the Mapleville, Rhode Island pilot in the Limited Sportsman ranking. Defending champion ‘Leadfoot’ Larry Barnett has yet to nab the checkered flag yet this season but may just find the chance to wow the crowd this Wednesday and make up some ground on the point leaders.

Moosup’s Jarred Roy is riding high in the Mini Stock ranks just 11-points above defending four-cylinder champion Kevin Moore. While Roy has visited victory lane twice, Moore is still looking for his first win of the season. A silently consistent Kyle Wing has been making waves this season, finding the hot-setup in his #7 Ford Mustang and currently finds himself just 12-points out of the money. Don’t count out the Marshfield driver on Thompson 150 presented by FloSports Wednesday as he looks for his second career Mini Stock win.

Along with a strong local showing, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour boasts a talent-filled roster including multi-time champions Doug Coby and Justin Bonsignore with fan-favorites Woody Pitkat, ‘Big Money’ Matt Hirschman and 2022 Thompson winners Craig Lutz and Eric Goodale. Ron Silk looks to continue his strong title chase with a Thompson 150 presented by FloSports win as does 2022 Rookie of the Year Austin Beers following his win at Lancaster Motorplex (NY) less than two weeks ago.

The Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park oval is back in action this Wednesday, August 16th with the return of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour! The nationally-renowned NASCAR Modifieds bring the thunder back to the hills of Eastern Connecticut along with the SK Light Modifieds, ACT-type Late Models, Limited Sportsman, and Mini Stocks for the third Wednesday night showdown of the 2023 season! Post Time is set for 5:30pm with adult general admission set at $45, children 12-6 for $10 and kids 5 and under free! Pit Gates open at 1:00pm with adult pit passes available for $55 and $30 for children 12 and under.

  1. Three tour mod races in 7 days. Not ideal.
It would appear they’re getting away with it. Car counts are minimally adequate at worst and robust at times like the race at the Speedbowl.
In the not too distant future we’ll be in schedule watch mode. What will we see? A realization that sanity should return to the number of events. Or will the players once again throw caution to the wind and do whatever the heck they want without regard to the fact they are one among many drinking at the trough of tour mod team participation?

  2. Shawn, what’s your expert opinion on the weather for the racing event?

And given the weather, do you think the NWMT race will be moved up?

    Thanks!

  3. Doug,

Will your Barcalounger be running slicks or rain tires tonight?

  4. darealgoodfella,
I think this overcast stuff is going to burn off, maybe even see some sun by late afternoon. I think everything will be on schedule for the evening.

  5. Good one darealgoodfella. I’ll have both sets of tires ready for the Barcalounger because that’s the way I roll, pun intended. Weather.com indicates plenty of clouds minimal prospects for rain.
Here’s an idea If you’re there tonight big guy. Consider flashing the middle finger if you seen a camera on you and I’ll know you’re thinking of me.
Consider also putting and entry in for the Pick 6. I know the boys would all appreciate your participation.

Doug i THINK it will get worse as far as races go, We all Know NASCAR will not back down with their schedule, Tri Track could easily Expand to more than 6 if they wanted, ROC seems to have a solid base and the Western NY/PA tracks seem to want races, Stafford is Stafford and the Arutes have the best facilty in the Notheast if not country so slim chance they will back down, MRS with new ownership and Milton Sponsor i assume will want a biiger piece of the pie. Questions are will May/Mich stay at Thompson? Will JDV continue both WMT and Open shows? Riverhead still look solid, and who knows if any New wants to have Tour Type racing. The pie is thin, who knows.
Future Radar does show some showers near T late afternoon early Evening
