THOMPSON – Tyler Chapman held off the charges of Alexander Pearl to win the 30-lap SK Light Modified feature Wednesday at Thompson Speedway.
It was the second victory in five starts this season at Thompson for Chapman, of Ellington.
“I thought [Pearl] was going to get me multiple times,” Chapman said. “… It was a fun race, a clean race and I’m happy to be in first place.”
Pearl, of Salem, who swept both SK Light Modified features at Thompson on July 26, was second.
“We were just a tick too free there,” Pearl said. “Got underneath him by just overheated the right rear [tire]. He seemed to pick it up after that.”
John O’Sullivan of Salem was third.
Danny Gamache Jr. broke out to the early lead. Behind him O’Sullivan moved to second past Todd Douillard on lap five.
On lap 8 O’Sullivan got under Gamache for the lead off of turn four with Chapman following him to second place.
On lap 12 Chapman challenged under O’Sullivan but the leader was up to the defense. A lap later though it was Chapman making the move by O’Sullivan off of turn two.
On lap 18 Pearl found the line under O’Sullivan in turn three and came off of turn four in second place.
Pearl got under Chapman through turns one and two on lap 21 with the pair coming off the corner side-by-side. Pearl had the advantage at the line to complete the lap.
The pair remained side-by-side for lap 22 with Chapman leading at the line to complete the lap. Chapman was able to clear Pearl off of turn two on lap 23 to regain the top spot.
After getting back to the front Chapman was able to keep Pearl at bay for the final six laps.
