THOMPSON – The reigning king of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action at Thompson Speedway proved in qualifying Sunday that he’s still the man to beat at the track.

Justin Bonsignore toured the .625-mile oval with a fast time of 19.039 seconds in qualifying to win the pole for Sunday’s Icebreaker 150 at Thompson.

Bonsignore, a three-time series champion, has 13 victories in 43 career Whelen Modified Tour starts at Thompson, which tops all active drivers. It marked his fourth pole in series action at the historic track.

It was the 31st career Whelen Modified Tour pole overall for the Holtsville, N.Y. driver.

Jake Johnson or Rehoboth, Mass., who led the way in practice Sunday at the track, was second in qualifying at 19.044 seconds.

Craig Lutz of Miller Place, N.Y. was third fastest in qualifying at 19.082 seconds.

Reigning series champion Ron Silk was fourth in qualifying and Bobby Santos III was fifth.

Silk won the season opening event on Feb. 10 at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway. Bonsignore won the second event of the season on March 29 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway.
