STAFFORD – What was looking to be a podium finish for Darrell Keane to open the season Saturday at Stafford Speedway ultimately led to him celebrating in victory lane.

After Paul Varricchio Jr. knocked Kevin Gambacorta out of the lead on lap 22, Keane was the beneficiary and drove to victory in the 30-lap Late Model feature Saturday at the NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford.

“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good,” Keane said. “… It’s a little bit of redemption to get back to victory lane.”

It was the first Late Model win at Stafford for Keane, of Enfield, since July 29, 2022 and his fifth win in the division overall.

Wayne Coury Jr. of Fairfield was second and Gambacorta third.

“The car was great,” Coury said. “A little tight. Nice and fast to start off the year. A little rough out there today. A little rougher than I thought it was going to be.”

Gambacorta, the reigning division champion, led the majority of the event but was spun out of the lead in turn two on lap 22 by Varricchio, who was black flagged for the incident.

“I’ve got to behave here,” Gambacorta said. “Sometimes the best car doesn’t always win. I guess that’s all I can say about that.”
