As last minute fill-in drivers go, Boehler Racing Enterprises found one that should definitely turns heads this weekend at Oswego Speedway.
Bobby Santos III will drive Ole Blue for BRE in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Toyota Modified Classic 150 Saturday at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway.
“I talked to [team owner Michael Boehler] this morning and it sounded like they needed a driver and it just worked out to do that,” Santos told RaceDayCT.
Jake Johnson started the first 10 events of the season on the Whelen Modified Tour for BRE. Boehler confirmed Sunday that Johnson had stepped away from the ride.
Santos is only tabbed to run the Oswego event for the team. Boehler said he is hoping to find one driver to run the final five events of the season. The next series event following Saturday at Oswego is the Eddie Partridge 256 on Sept. 14 at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway.
It’s a reunion of sorts for Santos with Ole Blue.
Santos scored the first of his 19 Whelen Modified Tour victories driving Ole Blue in the Xtra Mart 150 at Thompson Speedway on Oct. 14, 2007. Santos made 11 starts for BRE during the 2007 Whelen Modified Tour season.
Santos, a Franklin, Mass. native, was already scheduled to be at Oswego this weekend to run the 68th Budweiser Oswego Classic SuperModified event. That feature runs on Sunday with qualifying for that event scheduled for Friday.
“We’re already up there for qualifying on Friday and we didn’t have any plans for running a Modified there this year, so this worked out,” Santos said.
Santos, the 2010 Whelen Modified Tour champion, will be making his third series start of the season.
Excellent choice to fill the seat at Oswego. Santos will get everything out of the 3 it is capable of giving.
