STAFFORD – Results in the Limited Late Model division have proved to be one of the big surprises of the 2024 season at Stafford Speedway.
A division that just a few years ago seemed to be on the edge of disappearing has been one of the most competitive around in 2024.
Coming into Friday’s racing card at Stafford the division had feature 10 different winners over the first 13 events of the season.
Maybe most surprising about the division this year though was that those 10 winners over the first 13 events didn’t include three-time and reigning division champion Jeremy Lavoie.
On Friday the Windsor Locks driver finally broke through in 2024.
Lavoie drove away from the field over the closing laps to win the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature Friday at Stafford.
The first win of the season for Lavoie also represented his 25th career victory in the division.
“It feels good to get the monkey off my back,” Lavoie said. “This division is very competitive this year. I can’t believe I was one of the last guys to win a race. I can’t believe it took us this long. We were very optimistic coming into the year, but everybody showed some speed this year and we’ve been the one lacking. I can’t thank my crew enough for standing behind me and telling me never give up and their never give up attitude. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”
Travis Downey held off the last lap challenge of Travis Hydar to win the 20-lap Street Stock feature.
It was the second win of the season for Downey, of Barkhamstead. He scored his first win of the season on May 10.
“We’ve worked awfully hard to be up on the podium,” Downey said. “I’ve wanted to win every race obviously. It’s pretty tough to beat [Hydar]. Just super happy as a team to be here. Last week we got in a pretty good wreck. Lost the points lead. This is what we needed for our team to bounce back and rally. We’re just super stoked as a team to be up here right now.”
Hydar, of Woodbury, was second and Jeff Asselin of Granby, Mass. was third.
