STAFFORD – Checkers or wreckers is a popular mantra across the landscape of short track racing.
For Stafford Speedway Street Stock driver Travis Hydar, that mantra has literally been a way of life in 2024.
Last week at Stafford Hydar suffered a tire blowout while battling for the lead in the Street Stock feature.
Friday Hydar once again bounced back from disappointment in the perfect way, going back to victory lane.
Hydar drove away from Travis Downey over the closing laps to win the 20-lap Street Stock feature.
It was the eighth win in 12 features this year for Hydar, of Woodbury. And scarier for the competition is that Hydar seemingly found another way to beat the competition on Friday.
Hydar used an outside lane pass of Downey on lap 14 to go to the lead.
“That was a good one,” Hydar said. :I kept trying to get [Downey] on the bottom but I was getting loose up off there. I figured I’d go ahead and try the top because what else do I got to loose right? So, it worked and I’m super stoked about that. I’ve got that as an option now.”
Downey, of Barkhamstead, was second and Jason Lafayette of Somers was third.
Hydar moved past Tyler Trott for second place on lap nine and quickly moved in on the bumper of Downey.
On lap 13 Hydar gave Downey a bump through turn two and then went to the outside on the leader. The pair came to the line side-by-side and stayed that way through most of lap 14. Through turns three and four on lap 14 Hydar used the outside lane to power by Downey and take over the lead.
Caution flew on lap 15. On the ensuing restart Hydar was able to power away from Downey easily.
Gary Patnode of Barkhamstead won the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature.
Devon Jencik of Canton was second and Jeremy Lavoie of Windsor Locks third.
