The first-year Sunoco 604 Modified division at Thompson Speedway has been the Jon Puleo Show in 2024.
That theme continued on Sunday at the historic facility.
Puleo, of Branford, won the 30-lap Sunoco 604 Modified feature Sunday at Thompson Speedway.
Todd Owen of Somers was second and Isaiah Newcomb of Plymouth, Mass. was third.
It was the sixth win in eight Sunoco 604 Modified division races this year for Puleo. Newcomb and Keith Rocco are the only other drivers to win in an event in the division this season.
Tom Carey III of Orange, Mass. scored the $5,000 payday in winning the 75-lap Late Model feature.
Gabe Brown of Center Conway, N.H. was second and Erick Sands of Seabrook, N.H. was third.
Tyler Chapman of Ellington topped the 25-lap SK Light Modified feature. Steven Chapman of Ellington was second and John O’Sullivan of Salem was third.
Ryan Waterman of Danielson won the 20-lap Street Stock feature. Al Stone III of Durham was second and Corey Fanning of Mapleville, R.I. was third.
Ryan Pomposelli of Smithfield, R.I. won the 15-lap Mini Stock feature. Jared Roy of Sterling was second and Kevin Moore of Moosup was third.

Made the trip out too Thompson today. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and I want to support the place but I went with very low expectations. And those expectations were met. What a sad state of affairs Thompson is in. I mean at this point what the hell else can that operating group do? It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon and you get 8 Sk’s , 11 lites and 14 late models. That’s 14 late models for a $5000 to win 75 lapper. Waterford had more for less money for their big race. People were saying Thompson needs a weekend race. Well they got that weekend race and where were the fans? Attendance was just as bad as the car counts. If the act and pass guys just say screw it and quit, I wouldn’t blame them. That 50 lap 8 car race was just brutal to watch. It was like watching a test and tune session just like they billed it as. Just sad.
there is just not enough interest in short track racing here in CT like there was before. Too many racing divisions with different rules killed it. Used to be 2 divisions Mods and late models – everyone could bring their cars to Stafford, Waterford, Thompson – same rules, same tires.
I give Michaud and Mayberry, all the credit in the world, as it looks like this is done. Can’t blame them one bit.
You know, I went to the whelan tour race on the Wednesday night in August. The place was hopping, and it was great to see. It’s no Stafford on the amenities side, but it sure felt great to see it come alive again.
I told the lady at the beer stand, that I hoped they sold every single last hot dog and beer in the place, as they deserve it. I thought she was gonna jump out from behind the counter and hug me! Way more people affected on this state of affairs than what meets the eye I think. Again, I thank the 2 misters, that tried to make this be viable. I might have sat there for the last time after this upcoming World Series. Hope not.
Are the BIG 3 .. Icebreaker … August Mod Tour …World Series …… Profitable enough to carry them to 2025 ..?? Have 4 Nascar Modified Tour Shows along with 2 Other shows of some sort ,, McFarland ..?? TRUCK RACE ..??? anything to keep the High Banks alive…
I believe the grandstands would have been a lot better if the rained out Tri Track Icebreaker was rescheduled to this day not the Saturday for the World Series. Fans want to see tour-type modifieds.
@Bobf I don’t know if Thompson is going away completely. I think it depends on how popular the road course remains. Of course if they demolish the oval or even just the grandstands the place will be gone as a short track. But if the oval can continue to be leased to NASCAR a few times a year why not just keep it? Maybe “weekly” racing is gone.
