Longtime Stafford Speedway official Tom Fox is stepping away from his position as Director of Racing Operations and Competition at Stafford Speedway.
Stafford Speedway chief operating officer Paul Arute confirmed to RaceDayCT Tuesday evening that Fox informed track management that he was resigning from the position on Monday.
Fox, a longtime competitor in short track racing in the Northeast, had been in the Director of Racing Operations and Competition position at Stafford since the 2013 season.
“We had a great 12 years with Tom at Stafford,” Arute said. “He did a lot of really good not only for Stafford but for all of Connecticut racing, setting a lot of the standards that we hope everyone else kind of follows. Tom was a big part of doing that. We’ll definitely miss him. I know it’s a tough job and I know you can get burned out in that position. We definitely appreciate everything he has done for Stafford and for racing over the years. We wish Tom all the best.”
Fox was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday evening. Arute said the track will take their time in naming a replacement.
Fox had 60 career wins over a long career at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, including 44 wins in the track’s Late Model division. He also had 14 SK Modified victories and two Modified victories at the shoreline oval. He also had four Late Model wins at Stafford among a plethora of victories during his career away from the Speedbowl.

Interesting timing given the controversy related to recent DQs of a Fox affiliated(?) SK Light at the Bowl. According to the Sid’s view podcast, that controversy was a hot topic in the pits at the Bowl as the season ended. I don’t know the whole story. Perhaps someone here can fill me in.
Tom should really get back behind the wheel, and start racing again. In any division, we just need to see him racing again.
You’re making an awful big stretch trying to connect these two completely different and not affiliated things.
Are you really trying to say, a car he doesn’t drive, chief, or own got a dq at a different track and he decided, because of this, he would quit his job at Stafford? That makes less sense than asking why Oscar was a grouch when he lived outside in a trash can.
Should’ve came sooner. that Sly fox ?
He was very involved with Zack’s car at the bowl. At the very least there is an appearance of impropriety which should prevent anyone from letting him direct any racing or enforcement of rules.
Rich,
Was this your first week as a fan of motorsports? You should look up the story of Gary Nelson and then rethink your comment.
Franco – I’m still waiting for someone to recap the entire Speedbowl/DQs/Fox controversy for me. Sid’s View and RaceDayCT have teased some info, but neither has told the full story.
Rafter Fan,
Unfortunately, when it comes to the Speedbowl in its current state of ownership/management, you’re just not going to get a lot of cooperation getting the “full story” on anything. Unfortunately that’s the culture there now. I went over some of that in two Quickcast episodes recently.
