Behind The Curtain: When Things Went Off The Rails For Me With NASCAR Mod Tour Director Jimmy Wilson

May 15, 2020 at 3:52 pm …

That was the exact moment my working relationship with NASCAR Modified Tour series director Jimmy Wilson basically disappeared.

Crazy that I know the exact moment huh?

On Monday NASCAR announced that after 12 full seasons, Jimmy Wilson would be moving on from his role as NASCAR Modified Tour series director.

Let’s go behind the curtain on some journalistic meanderings and how what seemed like a fantastic 8-year working relationship went bad in an instant.

  1. Cape Cod Critic says

If NASCAR is smart, they will beg and pled with Chris Williams (SMART Tour Director) to take the helm as the new Whelen Modified Tour Director. And maybe even convince him to merge the two series. Williams is a better marketer, series promoter, and much more of a seemingly personable guy than Wilson, though I do not know either man and the later comment is simply an observation and hunch.

If I were Chris Williams, however, I would totally turn down the opportunity. He doesn’t need NASCAR, is successful at what he is doing now without all the NASCAR strings attached, and has created a successful working relationship with the folks at the Tri-Track Series. With NASCAR’s court issues lingering and an incredibly strong business monopoly case against it, I would think Chris would steer clear of forming any ties with NASCAR until the dust settles. It will no doubt be a different landscape once that case is done.

  2. Smart tour director, is a standup guy. I was convinced of that after the unmuffled interview of him back a month or so ago.
But I think it just wont work. No matter who is the Nascar tour director, things will not much change. It’s the pecking order of Nascar that’s the issue imo. As far as Nascar is concerned, it appears to me, that the tour is their bottom feeder in their world. It seems that NASCAR puts the same well funded cup , xfinity and truck demands for money, travel, and track obligations, on the backs of the dedicated people on the tour, without afterthought . However, tour just doesn’t have a roster full of gazzillionaires, big sponsorships, and full time employees, like cup does. But Nascar doesn’t seem to know the difference.
So, the Smart tour can succeed in large part I think, because of the freedom they have dedicated to one series. Independence. There does not appear to be any obligations (to my eyes) to a corporate structure or board room.
Smart has the freedom to be who they want to be, and a dedicated and smart guy to promote the series in that realm.
I dont feel the Nascar tour is in anyway structured like that, and it would make anybody who takes that tour directors job probably come to regret it. They would probably be beholden to the Daytona expectations, without a lot of financial support or backing, for smooth sailing. We have all seen it if you follow the tour at all. Even the best promoter will have troubles with that. Particularly if no one is having any fun…..
    Jmo.
