THOMPSON – Don’t expect an announcement very soon concerning the naming of a new NASCAR Modified Tour series director.
That was the word from Joey Dennewitz, NASCAR’s managing director for regional series racing, who was on hand Wednesday at Thompson Speedway for the running of the NASCAR Modified Tour Icebreaker 150.
Wednesday’s event was originally scheduled to be run on March 30, was postponed to April 5 and then postponed again to Wednesday.
On March 24 NASCAR announced that current NASCAR Modified Tour series director Jimmy Wilson would be moving to a new role within the company. It was announced at that time that Wilson would remain in the position with the NASCAR Modified Tour until his replacement was named.
Wednesday’s event marked the first for the series since the announcement that Wilson would be vacating the role.
Wilson did not address the announcement of his departure during the driver’s meeting Wednesday at Thompson.
“I’m still here as the Modified Tour director and will be for the foreseeable future,” Wilson told RaceDayCT after the meeting.
Asked if he expected to still be in the role for the next NASCAR Modified Tour event on May 3 at Monadnock Speedway, Wilson said: “Oh yeah, there’s nothing happening right now.”
Dennewitz said NASCAR is still reviewing applicants and conducing interviews in regards to the position.
“The timetable for filling the series director position is as quick as we can,” Dennewitz said. “However, I think we’re more measured in our approach in what we want and we’re willing to wait for the right candidate. I was actually very encouraged to see some of the candidates that came through the portal and applied and those interviews are ongoing.
“I think this is a big opportunity for somebody to take a hold of an incredible series. The Tour is very special and very near and dear to NASCAR’s heart and finding the right person to take the reigns is important”
