Nick Anglace hits the track every week at Stafford sporting the colors of UConn athletics.
And sports fans in Connecticut are plenty familiar with some standout victories for UConn teams that came down late dramatics.
On Friday Anglace put on his version of the on-track buzzer beater.
Anglace passed Stephen Kalogiannis through turns three and four on the final lap to win the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.
“I guess our luck finally changed,” Anglace said. “The last two weeks have not been going our way. I tried to do it as clean as I could with [Kalogiannis], I know he’s going for his first win. I’m just glad that it was clean and it was a really good finish. I was just hoping it stuck down in [turn] three. I just hope you guys enjoyed the show. At one point I was counting myself out but we did it.”
It was the third victory of the season for Anglace, of Seymour.
“A season like this is something I’ve wanted for probably six years and for it to finally be here is a surreal moment,” Anglace said. “I’m just glad to have UConn on the car for it. Hopefully we can get one more by the end of the year.”
Kalogiannis of New Hartford had a career best second place finish.
“The car was great. … I know Angalce is aggressive on the bottom shot so I was trying to protect. Overshot my entry and went up the track and I gave him in the inside line. From there I was just trying to hang on to it. But it was good racing. It was clean racing. I’m happy with a podium.”
Daltin McCarthy of Oxford, Mass. was third.
Nickolas Hovey was fourth. Hovey came into the event sitting 28 points behind division leader Meghan Fuller. With Fuller’s 11th place finish, Hovey cut Fuller’s lead to 14 points with one event remaining.
