THOMPSON – Todd Owen closed out a championship season in perfect style Friday at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway.
Owen, of Somers, checked out from the field on the way to victory in the 30-lap Sunoco Modified feature Friday at Thompson Speedway.
It was the third victory in eight starts in the division this year for Owen and clinched his first Thompson Speedway title.
“I finished second here a whole bunch in the points runs in my day so it’s pretty cool to get [a championship],” Owen said. “Definitely want to think Cris Michaud, Tom Mayberry, Mike Mayberry, everybody that stuck with this thing to get this [division] off the ground.”
Keith Rocco of Wallingford was second and Zack Sangermano of Plainfield third.
“It’s been a while since we finished second,” said Rocco, who has four victories in seven starts in the division this year. … We missed it tonight. We were a little bit too tight. Really good car.”
Said Sangermano: “It feels good. We’ve been making great strides with the car. … You’re going again two guys who are the best in a decade to do it, [Owen] and [Rocco]. So be up there with them guys is a great feeling.”
Derek Ramstrom controlled the pace at the front for the opening laps.
Sangermano made a bid to get under Ramstrom in turn one on lap five. Ramstrom fended off the bid and it allowed Owen to move to second and Rocco to third.
On the next lap Owen got by Ramstrom for the top spot with Rocco following to second and Sangermano to third.
By lap 17 Owen had opened up nearly a one second lead over Rocco with Sangermano a distant third, nearly three seconds off the lead.
