STAFFORD – Michael Bennett had plenty on his mind away from the racetrack Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway.

With his wife Lindsay ready to go into labor at any point with the couple’s first daughter, Bennett wasn’t even sure he’d be competing Friday at Stafford.

But with the baby holding off, Bennett took the opportunity to head back to victory lane at Stafford Friday.

Bennett drove away from the field to win the 30-lap Late Model feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.

Kevin Gambacorta of Ellington was second and Josh Wood of Palmer, Mass. third.

Bennett said hearing Thursday that the baby could come at any moment had him wondering all day if he’d make it on track for the Late Model feature.

“It’s was up in the air,” Bennett said. “My wife is that close. Thursday she had an appointment and a lady there said she wouldn’t be surprised if it was tonight. But that came and went. It was pretty stressful. I didn’t get much sleep last night. Today was pretty stressful, but when I strapped to [go out for the feature] I knew there was no turning back.”

It was the fourth victory in 12 events this year for Bennett, but first since May 22. Bennett won three of the first five events of the year but had been winless over the previous six events.

“It’s been a long time but it’s not from a lack of trying,” Bennett said. “We’ve had a good car, a few off nights, a few mishaps, but I’m glad we were able to get it all together.”

Bennett went by Ed Ricard for the lead on a restart late and quickly left the field behind.

“We dad a great restart on the outside,” Bennett said. “Everything worked there for us.”
