THOMPSON – Todd Owen added to his impressive short track racing resume by checking off victory in a new division Friday at Thompson Speedway.
After a wild opening 10 laps, Owen drove away from Keith Rocco over the closing laps to win the 30-lap Sunoco 604 Modified feature Friday at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway.
It was the first victory in the division for Owen, of Somers.
“That was awesome racing early on,” Owen said. “That was crazy. We were all going hard at different speed levels there. We were bumping and hitting each other a little bit, but it was fun. I just want to thank Tom Mayberry and Cris Michaud for putting on this World Series and putting this [division] on. It’s taking off. A couple cars every time they come back and a couple more and a couple more. It’s pretty cool. I’m happy to be here. The car was awesome. I want to thank all of my guys for all they do for me, to put up with this crazy schedule we do. I couldn’t do it without them.”
Rocco, of Wallingford, was second and Jon Puleo of Branford, who had won the last four races in the division, was third.
Owen got by Isaiah Newcomb for the lead on lap eight. Newcomb tried to fight back on Owen but ended up losing third place to Rocco on lap nine.
Rocco was able to get under Owen for the lead off of turn two on lap 10. On lap 11 Rocco got up in the track in turn two, allowing Owen to go low to the lead, with Tyler Barry following to third.
Rocco fought back to second couldn’t make up any ground on Owen over the final 10 laps.
“I got the lead and drove myself into the marbles,” Rocco said. “I got the right front crudded up and it took me a couple laps to get it cleaned and get back up. It was a good race.”
