THOMPSON – Todd Owen and Keith Rocco have had plenty of battles over the years in SK Modified features at Connecticut short tracks.

Saturday the pair made for some drama to close out the first year of the Sunoco 604 Modifieds at Thompson Speedway.

Owen and Rocco took the checkered flag while wrecking together with Owen scoring victory in the 30-lap Sunoco 604 Modified feature Saturday at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway.

With Rocco leading, Owen made a diving move under Rocco into turn three on the final lap. Owen came off turn four leading in the drag race to the checkered flag. Contact between the two on the frontstretch saw Rocco’s car picking Owen’s car up off the track as the pair came to the checkered flag. Both cars took the checkered flag going sideways on the track.

Owen, of Somers, got his first victory in the division on Friday night at Thompson.

“I was waiting for the last corner to try to make a dive bomb on him.” Owen said. “It doesn’t matter what I think. It’s alright. It’s a good weekend for us. We came out and got a couple wins so it’s good for us.”

Said Rocco: “I don’t really have to explain, I’m pretty sure the fans [saw] what happened. I’ve got to thank everybody on this team. Second place, what are you going to do?”

Rocco, of Wallingford, also finished second to Owen on Friday night. Jon Puleo of Branford finished third Saturday and Friday to clinch the division championship.

On lap six Rocco found the lane under Tyler Barry into turn three to move into the lead.

By lap 15 Puleo was all over the rear bumper of Rocco.

On lap 17 Puleo got Rocco up the track through turns three and four and drove under him for the lead. Rocco returned the favor on the next lap, moving Puleo up in turn three to go back to the front. Owen followed Rocco to move into second.

Owen stalked Rocco for the final 12 laps before making his move on the final lap.

  1. Suitcase Jake says

Owen should be ashamed of the way he drove that race , he kept hitting the 22 of Newcome that did cause the 75 of Barry to spin then he knocked the 27 into the wall and he spun . Then he knocked Rocco out of the lead and ran him up and then wouldn’t give him a lane to race in the coming off the corner . Angled Rocco high and towards the outside wall and finally Rocco got sick of getting used up and turned left .. I am a Owen fan .. but the way he drove that second feature it was very disappointing and I have to say it was dirty driving.. totally unnecessary and out of character for him…, he needs to watch the replay and make some serious decisions about his driving style in that one …

  2. Owen is not a clean driver.
