It’s the question, ‘What might have been?’ that Matt Hirschman fans were asking following the 2024 season for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

Despite only running 12 of 16 events in 2024 on the Whelen Modified Tour, Hirschman finished seventh in the final series standings with one victory, nine top-five’s and 11 top-10’s.

Hirschman ended up having the second highest average points earned per event on the Whelen Modified Tour in 2024.

Hirschman collected 485 points in 2024 for an average per race of 40.4 points per event.

Justin Bonsignore, who won his fourth series title in 2024, ended the season with 673 points, collecting a series high average of 42.1 points per event.

Ron Silk, who finished second in the series standings, finished the year with 641 points for an average of 40.1 points per event, just shy of Hirschman’s average.

So the question is, will Matt Hirschman go chasing a Whelen Modified Tour championship with a full-time run with the series in 2025?

I wouldn’t think so. He likes to mold his schedule around races with the biggest payouts. Ain’t making any money running the Whelan tour full time.

  2. @Captain+obvious I don’t think that’s completely true. I know he has the “big money” moniker, and he definitely appears at a lot of the biggest money events like the Tri Track races. But he’s also made appearances for the Racing Guys who offer somewhat smaller payouts and at the Islip 300 which I know two years ago was only paying $7,000 to win. He might just appreciate making his own schedule. However if he really is Big Money Matt the Whelen tour this year is probably offering the biggest winner’s checks across the board. I guess we’ll have to see since the other tracks don’t announce the purses until closer to the event.

Not sure about running the Tour Full Time , But I do know this…. Matt will Win more Features from NH to Florida and everywhere in between….He will dominate at most tracks He shows up at and he is a pleasure to watch, Love or Hate him… Big Money adds something to EVERY RACE HE ENTERS!!!! The fans and competitors alike each know when he pulls into the pits , They have to bring their A-Game if they wanna beat Big Money to the Finish Line,….I am still waiting for Him to get that BREAKTHROUGH WIN at THOMPSON…. It could be this year…. I am sure He will be quite Happy to get that Monkey off His back. Jon McKennedy finally broke through at Thompson after like 7 or 8 2nd place finishes.. Jon was so so Happy after that race, It was probably the happiest i have seen him after a race….Matt’s Father had plenty of Wins at the HIGH BANKS over the years in the # 3 Old Blue and the #48 car later on …. So i am sure Big Money wants to add his name to the Thompson Modified Win List also….

Matt races for a living; he’s going to run races that make economic sense for him and his family. A win without a huge tire bill, fuel bill, and crew travel expenses is a lot more profitable for him than some of the WMT races.
