The chase was on in recent weeks at Stafford Speedway to see who would become the next first-time winner at the track to become the 700th different winner in the history of the track.
Friday night, in the fourth event of the racing card, it was Dean Lambros scoring victory in the SK Light Modified feature to score that distinction of the 700th winner in track history.
One race later it was P.J. Evans of Uncasville beginning the march to 800.
Evans scored his first career victory at Stafford by winning the Midstate Site Development Street Stock Firecracker 30 Friday, becoming the 701st different winner in track history.
“I just can’t believe it,” Evans said. “We had so many countless hours working on this car since the start of the season. We struggled. We finally got this thing figured out.
“That was just hectic. I just tried to keep myself out of trouble. I tried to hold them down at the bottom the best I could. I was really free. But I’m just happy to be here. This was not expected for this season. I can’t believe it.”
Reigning division champion Travis Downey of Barkhamstead was second in the caution-marred event.
“It was really a war out there,” Downey said. “I’m not sure what’s going on. There’s a lot of beating and banging out there. Some guys get a little upset when you give it back to them. It is what it is. We’re real happy to finish second.
Brent Gleason of Griswold was third.
