Last year Chris Our Motorsports celebrated in victory lane in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s lone annual trip to Bristol Motor Speedway.
That celebration revolved around the 74th career Whelen Modified Tour victory, extended the record of all-time wins in the series for driver Mike Stefanik.
Fast forward to 2014, and there was Chris Our Motorsports again, starting back at one.
Series rookie Tommy Barrett Jr. went to the lead past Bobby Santos III on lap 139 and then held on through a late restart to win the Whelen Modified Tour Bush’s Beans 150 Wednesday at Bristol Motor Speedway.
It was the first career Whelen Modified tour victory for the 19-year old Barrett, from Millis, Mass. Barrett replaced Stefanik, a seven-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, in the Chris Our Motorsports ride over the offseason.
Barrett’s first career victory came in his 12th career Whelen Modified Tour start. Before Wednesday his best career finish in the division was a fourth on July 19 at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H.
Santos, of Franklin, Mass. was second and Ron Silk of Norwalk third.
Series points lead Doug Coby of Milford was fourth.
After getting by Santos for the lead, Barrett quickly checked out from the field before caution flew on lap 143. Barrett had little challenge pulling away on the final restart with four laps remaining.
