Lee Pulliam Closes On Third Whelen All-American Series National Title

A late season run for the ages has put Lee Pulliam in place to capture his third NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship.

Pulliam, of Semora, N.C., strengthened his hold on the top spot in the Whelen All-American Series national standings this past weekend by scoring three victories, including two Sunday.

Since July 11 Pulliam has 15 victories and four second places.

“It’s been a pretty amazing couple months,” Pulliam told NASCAR Home Tracks.

Pulliam, the 2012 and 2013 national champion, has 702 points on the strength of 28 wins, 44 top-five’s and 46 top-10’s in 49 starts this year at South Boston (Va.) Speedway, Caraway Speedway in Sophia, N.C, Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va. and Southern National Raceway in Kenly, N.C.

Under the point structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I standings, a race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 18 cars. Second place receives two fewer points and so on through the field. Three bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a single-digit starting position and five bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a double-digit starting position. Whelen All-American Series points season will run through Sunday, Sept. 20.

Dirt racer Thomas Tillison Jr. of Wellston, OK, remained in second place this week with 681 points on 15 wins and 24 top-fives in 28 starts at Salina (OK) Highbanks Speedway and Flint Creek Speedway in West Siloam, Ok.

Taylor Holdaway of Orillia, Ontario, who competes in a Late Model at Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario, moved from fourth to third this week with 676 points on 12 wins and 21 top-fives in 22 starts.

Modified driver Jimmy Zacharias of Candor, N.Y., who competes at Chemung (N.Y) Speedrome and Holland (N.Y) Speedway, feel from third to fourth in the national standings with with 670 points on 15 victories and 26 top-fives in 29 starts. Zacharias started both SK Modified features at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl Saturday but was unable to gain any points.

Keith Rocco, the 2010 national champion, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, Stafford Speedway and Thompson Speedway, remained fifth this week. Rocco has 660 points with 11 victories, 34 top-five’s and 41 top-10’s in 46 starts.

Ryan Preece of Berlin remained sixth in the standings this week. Preece competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Thompson and part-time in the Tour Type Modified division at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway. Preece has 629 points. He has 11 wins, 33 top-five’s and 40 top-10’s in 43 starts this year.

Ted Christopher of Plainville, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Waterford, moved from ninth to eighth nationally. Christopher has 613 points with seven victories in 40 starts.

Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., who competes full-time in the SK Modified division at Stafford, has six wins and moved from 12th to 10th nationally this week with 590 points over 20 starts.
