Lee Pulliam Moves To Lead In NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Standings

A perfect weekend of racing vaulted two-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion Lee Pulliam back to the top of the national standings this week.

Pulliam, of Semora, N.C., had a first and a third in Late Model action Saturday South Boston (Va.) Speedway and then scored two Late Model wins Sunday at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, N.C.

The wins helped Pulliam move from third to first, overtaking previous leader, dirt Late Model driver Thomas Tillison Jr. of Wellston, Ok. Pulliam now has 684 points on the strength of 25 wins, 39 top-fives and 41 top-10’s in 44 starts this year.

Pulliam, who also competes at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., was the national champion in 2012 and 2013.

Under the point structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I standings, a race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 18 cars. Second place receives two fewer points and so on through the field. Three bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a single-digit starting position and five bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a double-digit starting position. Whelen All-American Series points season will run through Sunday, Sept. 20.

Tillison, races at Salina (OK) Highbanks Speedway and Flint Creek Speedway in West Siloam, Ok. Both are .375-mile ovals. Flint Creek is a first-year NASCAR-sanctioned track.

Tillison has 14 victories and 22 top-five’s in 26 starts, which is good for 674 points.

Modified driver Jimmy Zacharias of Candor, N.Y., who competes at Chemung (N.Y) Speedrome and Holland (N.Y) Speedway jumped from fifth to third in the national standings with with 670 points on 15 victories and 26 top-fives in 27 starts.

Taylor Holdaway of Orillia, Ontario, who competes in a Late Model at Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario, fell from second to fourth in the standings this week with 665 points on 11 wins and 20 top-five’s in 21 starts.

Keith Rocco, the 2010 national champion, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, Stafford Speedway and Thompson Speedway, fell from fourth to fifth in the country, despite winning Saturday’s SK Modified feature at the Speedbowl.

Rocco has 658 points with 11 victories, 31 top-five’s and 38 top-10’s in 43 starts.

Ryan Preece of Berlin remained sixth in the standings this week.

Preece competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Thompson and part-time in the Tour Type Modified division at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway. Preece has 622 points. He has 10 wins, 32 top-five’s and 39 top-10’s in 42 starts this year.

Ted Christopher of Plainville, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Waterford, remained ninth nationally. Christopher has 598 points with six victories in 37 starts.

Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., who competes full-time in the SK Modified division at Stafford, has six wins and remained 12th this week nationally with 574 points over 19 starts.
