STAFFORD – With a fairly comfortable 14-point lead going into the season finale, nobody could have held it against Stephen Kopcik if he took the safe road to an easy top-five finish and his first SK Modified title at Stafford Motor Speedway.

But there was no cruising for Kopcik Saturday at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Putting a championship on the line, Kopcik battled tightly for victory over the closing laps of the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Saturday at Stafford.

Kopcik, of Newtown, finished second to Tony Membrino Jr. of Plantsville. It clinched Kopcik’s firs track title.

“In the moment I don’t know what I wanted more, that win or the championship,” Kopcik said. “But, that was fun racing with Tony Membrino and just everyone. Ninety percent of the people here are just fun to race with.”

Kopcik finished 20 points ahead of second place D.J. Burnham in the standings. Burnham, of East Hartford, finished fifth in Saturday’s feature.

“It’s unbelievable,” Kopcik said. “The effort put into this car by all the team members is the reason we’re standing here right now. It’s crazy. It hasn’t even sunk in yet.”

Kopcik finished the season with one victory and 18 top-five’s in 22 events.

It was the fourth victory of the season for Membrino, who ended up third in the standings.

“There’s something special about winning the season finale at any racetrack,” Membrino said. “You get to keep those bragging rights for the whole entire winter and it’s a good way to start off the next year. You’re on a good note, the car’s in one piece. … I’m just really thrilled. It’s my personal best for wins in one season. I’ll remember this one for a while.”
