Last season saw New England Racing Fuel distribute over $10,000 in gas certificates to Stafford Speedway drivers and are scheduled to distribute that same amount in 2016.

“We’re looking forward to supporting another season of NASCAR racing at Stafford Speedway,” said John Holland of New England Racing Fuel. “I can’t believe this is almost 20 years we’ve been doing this program with Stafford, but it’s been one of the best programs that we’ve been involved with. We do a lot of promotion and advertising throughout each season and the Stafford Contingency Program has consistently been one of our best avenues to advertise and promote New England Racing Fuel and our Sunoco brand. Each season I’d say we get between 50 and 100 thank you’s from drivers letting us know they appreciate our contingency bonus and most of the thank you’s we get from drivers are hand written. It’s been a rewarding experience for us and we’re excited to be involved with another exciting season at Stafford.”

Nice press release that neglects the truth about this program. First, Sunoco gets an exclusive monopoly on fuel. In turn, everyone pays more for fuel so they and Stafford can boast that they give so much of it away. In reality, this amounts to a regressive tax on those teams that aren’t amongst the top teir in their division…

Gastronomic Gary, explain to me how this is a regressive tax. Sunoco charges the same for fuel across all tracks they serve, Stafford and New England race fuels have an agreement for a contingency program that provides the drivers with gift certificates if they finish in the top 3. A regressive tax would mean that the higher divisions are charged less for fuel and the tax is passed along to the lower divisions.
