STAFFORD – The reigning champ clawed to the top of the charts in the final practice for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour NAPA Spring Sizzler 200 Saturday at Stafford Motor Speedway.
Two-time defending series champion Doug Coby led the way in the second and final Whelen Modified Tour practice Saturday in preparation for Sunday’ NAPA Spring Sizzler 200 at Stafford Motor Speedway.
Coby, a two-time winner of the Spring Sizzler (2006, 2012), put up a fast lap of 18.120 seconds (99.338 mph) seconds during the 45-minute session.
Coby, of Milford, finished fourth in the season opening Whelen Modified Tour Icebreaker 150 on April 10 at Thompson Speedway. He won the pole for the Icebreaker.
Timmy Solomito of Islip, N,Y., who led the first practice session of the day at Stafford, was second in the final session with a fast lap of 18.184 seconds (98.988 mph). Solomito scored his first career Whelen Modified Tour victory on April 10 at Thompson.
Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. was third fastest in the session at 18.193 seconds (98.939 mph).
Woody Pitkat of Stafford, the defending Spring Sizzler champion, was fourth in the final session at 18.200 seconds (98.901 mph).
Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, preparing for his first start of the season, was fifth fastest (18.201 seconds, 98.896 mph).
