THOMPSON – At some point soon Thompson Speedway may want to have over a deed for NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole positions to Doug Coby.

The two-time defending series champion is owning them of late at the track.

For the third consecutive Whelen Modified Tour event at Thompson, Coby will take the field to green from the top starting spot.

Coby, of Milford, won the pole in qualifying Wednesday for tonight’s Thompson 125.

It was the third consecutive Whelen Modified Tour pole at Thompson for Coby dating back to the series season finale in 2015. He also won the pole for the season opening Icebreaker 150 in April.

Coby toured the .625-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.863 seconds Wednesday.

It was the 14th career series pole for Coby, a three-time series champ, and his fourth overall at Thompson. Coby has won the pole for four of the five series events this season and has earned the pole in seven of the last eight events overall dating back to last year.

Timmy Solomito of Islip, N.Y., who got his first series victory in the Icebreaker 150 on April 10, was second in qualifying at 18.868 seconds.

Ryan Preece of Berlin was third fastest with a lap of 18.872 seconds.

Shawn Solomito of Islip, N.Y. was fourth fastest and Woody Pitkat of Stafford fifth in qualifying.

  1. If not for bad racing at back of the field Max Zachem should have won the race.So many late race cautions in the back of the field cost him. What an effort for an under funded team.Way to go Max.
