The chase is on every year for another NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title for Wallingford’s Keith Rocco, and he looks to be setting himself up to get back in the hunt once in 2016.

Rocco, the 2010 national champion, sits third in the latest NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national standings.

Matt Bowling, who competes at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., Caraway Speedway in Sophia N.C. and South Boston (Va.) Speedway, currently leads the national standings with 358 points based on four victories, 10 top-five’s and 11 top-10’s in 12 starts this year.

Under the point structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I standings, a race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 18 cars. Second place receives two fewer points and so on through the field. Three bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a single-digit starting position and five bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a double-digit starting position. Whelen All-American Series points season will run through Sunday, Sept. 18.

Rocco and Chase Purdy are tied for second nationally with 357 points each.

Rocco competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford Motor Speedway, Thompson Speedway and the New London-Waterford Speedbowl. He had wins at Waterford and Thompson last week.

Overall Rocco has five victories, eight top-five’s and 11 top-10’s in 12 starts this year.

Purdy, who competes at Greenville Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C. and Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedway, has seven victories, nine top-five’s and 11 top-10’s in 11 starts this year.

Ted Christopher of Plainville, who competes in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Waterford, is 11th nationally with 280 points. Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., who competes full-time at Stafford and has three victories this year, is 22nd nationally with 219 points.
