STAFFORD – It’s a fairly common sight on the short tracks of Connecticut to see Doug Dunleavy’s name making laps.
Dunleavy, through his business, Dunleavy Truck & Trailer Repair, is a major sponsor supporter of numerous teams around the Northeast and even in the south. Dunleavy has been a major supporter of Modified racing and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for the past few years.
But Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway it wasn’t just decals representing Dunleavy’s business making laps around the half-mile oval. It was actually Dunleavy himself.
Dunleavy, along with his girlfriend Ashley Lee and his son Doug Jr., will compete in tonight’s 15-lap DARE Stock feature at Stafford. They will compete in cars from Rent A Racecar.
“It was just something fun I wanted to do, a birthday thing,” Dunleavy said. “I’m sponsoring a [K&N Pro Series East] car tonight (Ronnie Bassett Jr.), so I figured it was a good night to do it.”
Dunleavy competed in a Street Stock in the 1980’s at the former Riverside Park Speedway and competed briefly with the New England Truck Series. He ran his last race in 2009.
Dunleavy sponsors DARE Stock division driver Johnny Walker. He is also a major supporter of the NAPA SK 5K event at Stafford. It will be the first time he drives a DARE Stock car.
“I wanted to go play with Johnny Walker a little bit,” Dunleavy said.
