STAFFORD – Three-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby has been the absolute dominator of series action in 2016 at Stafford Motor Speedway.

But on Friday it was a two-time series champion edging out Coby to start the day at Stafford.

Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. topped the speed charts in practice Friday afternoon for tonight’s Whelen Modified Tour Stafford 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Lia toured the half-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.331 second (98.194 mph).

Coby, of Milford, was second during the one-hour practice with a fast lap of 18.438 seconds (97.624 mph). Coby has won both Whelen Modified Tour events at Stafford this year and the last three dating back to last year’s Fall Final.

Coby, looking for his third consecutive series title and fourt in the past five years, currently leads the Whelen Modified Tour standings.

Lia, the 2007 and 2009 series champion, is third in standings, 36 points behind Coby. Timmy Solomito sits second in the standings, 34 points behind Coby.

Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., was third fastest in practice Friday with a fast lap of 18.451 seconds (97.556 mph).

Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, N.Y. (18.455 seconds, 97.535 mph) and Bobby Santos III of Franklin, Mass. (18.536 seconds, 97.108 mph) rounded out the top-five in practice respectively.
