Doug Coby Up Front For Final Whelen Mod Tour Sunoco World Series 150 Practice At Thompson

THOMPSON – The reigning champ carried the torch for the final practice of the 2016 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season.

Doug Coby of Milford led the way during the second and final practice Saturday at Thompson Speedway in preparation for Sunday’ Sunoco World Series 150.

Coby toured the .625-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.700 seconds.

Coby is looking to clinch his fourth series title on Sunday and looking to become the first driver since the series started in 1985 to win three consecutive titles. His other title came in 2012.

Coby takes a 20-point lead over Justin Bonsignore into the final event and needs to finish 16th or better to clinch the title.

Bonsignore, of Holtsville, N.Y., was second during the 45-minute second practice sesson with a fast lap of 18.743 seconds. Bonsignore was fastest during the first practice of the day.

Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. was third fastest during the second session with a fast lap of 18.799 seconds.

Eric Goodale of Riverhead, N.Y. and Shawn Solomito of Islip, N.Y. rounded out the top five respectively in the second practice.
