THOMPSON – Grabbing max points and then seeing where all the chips fall beyond that is the game plan this weekend for Justin Bonsignore at Thompson Speedway.
The Holtsville, N.Y. driver goes into Sunday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season ending Sunoco World Series 150 trailing standings leader Doug Coby by 20 points.
Coby, of Milford, is trying to get his fourth championship and become the first driver in series history to win three consecutive. Bonsignore is looking for his first series title.
That quest for getting everything he can get out of the weekend started in positive fashion for Bonsignore Saturday morning at Thompson.
Bonsignore led the way in the first of two practices for the Whelen Modified Tour Saturday.
Bonsignore toured the .625-mile Thompson Speedway oval with a fast lap of 18.792 seconds .
Bonsignore won in the Whelen Modified Tour’s most recent visit to Thompson Speedway in the Budweiser King of Beers 150 on Aug. 10.
Timmy Solomito of Islip, N.Y. was second fastest during the 45-minute session with a fast lap of 18.806 seconds. Solomito got his first career series victory in the season opening Icebreaker 150 in April at Thompson.
Coby was third fastest during the session at 18.842 seconds. A 16th place finish or better for Coby on Sunday clinches the championship.
