THOMPSON – Conservative is rarely a word heard when it comes to Ryan Waterman in a Limited Sportsman at Thompson Speedway.

Waterman, of Danielson, could be considered one of the true showmen of the division over the past few years, never afraid to mix it up with anyone on the track.

But on Sunday at Thompson aggressiveness was traded for treading easily, for good reason.

Waterman recovered from damage caused by a first lap incident to finish sixth and clinch his first Limited Sportsman championship in the 20-lap feature for the division Sunday at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway.

“It feels like it’s not happening,” Waterman said. “I would have never guessed I would be able to do this.”

Phil Jacques of Dudley, Mass. won the event.

Waterman came into the weekend holding a 10-point lead over Scott Sundeen in the standings.

A first lap crash meant major damage for Sundeen and sent him to the rear of the field.

Waterman though caught some of the wreck and had to nurse his ride home the rest of the way.

Sundeen was able to rally through the field and finish just behind Waterman in seventh.

“I knew [Sundeed] was in trouble but I was also in trouble too,” Waterman said. “On the same wreck [Sundeen] was in I bent something on the front end and the car was really slow.”
