WATERFORD – With his third consecutive NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship in the rearview, Doug Coby took some time do some Midget moonlighting Sunday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

Coby, of Milford, scored the victory in the 25-lap Shane Hammond Memorial NEMA Midget feature at Sunday’s Bemers Big Show at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

Coby ran the event for Bertrand Motorsports. He was chased to the line by his Bertrand Motorsports teammate Todd Bertrand of Danielson. Seth Carlson of Brimfield, Mass. was third.

The complexion of the NEMA championship was changed greatly by an accident in the 25-lap Pro Four Modified feature earlier on the race card. In that event, Randy Cabral of Plymouth, Mass. was involved in a vicious turn two wreck. Cabral was taken from the track and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Joey Payne of Fairlawn, N.J., replaced Cabral in the third Bertrand Motorsports ride and finished eighth.

Cabral came into the weekend holding a 13-point lead in the NEMA standings over John Zych Jr. of Mendon, Mass. Zych finished fourth Sunday to clinch the title.

Jim Chambers of Atkinson, N.H. won the 25-lap NEMA Lite feature. Brett Meservey of Brewster, Mass. was victorious in the 25-lap Pro Four feature.

Speedowl Mini Stock division regular Jacob Perry of Pawcatuck, was seventh in the Pro Four feature, but led the way for the Pro Four Lite class. Rob Murphy of Rochester, Mass. won the 25-lap Truck feature.

Hi there, I’m Randy’s sister Stacy. He does have a concussion and broken ribs. He was released from the hospital yesterday and is back home, but cannot use his phone or watch TV and is home from work so he’s pretty bored!! He’s more upset about the Pro 4 and missing his first NEMA race in a long, long time!! Thank you everyone for your concern!! I know he appreciates it!!
