Rain Forces Cancellation Friday At Stafford Motor Speedway

STAFFORD – Weather has been the dominator of action in 2017 at Stafford Motor Speedway, and that was once again the case Friday.

Just before 6 p.m. Friday thunderstorms began at Stafford Motor Speedway forcing cancellation of Friday night’s racing program and postponement of the fireworks that were scheduled.

It was the fourth rain out of the season at Stafford.

“We tried to get it in but, due to the severe weather forecasted for this evening we have decided to cancel tonight’s scheduled event,” Stafford Motor Speedway general manager Mark Arute said. “Well be back with with the big one, the fourth annual NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K, let’s hope we stay dry next week.”

The fireworks will now be part of the July 14 program at the track. The Senior Outlaw Kart race scheduled for Friday will be moved to July 28.

  1. It looked like a line of storms that would pass so I headed to Stafford with hopes of a full nice of racing action after a delay. But it’s never a good sign when you get there and almost get run over by an avalanche exiting cars and haulers. Oh well.

Doug, there are some marvelous weather forecasting capabilities available to the public.

  4. They weren’t too quick to pull the plug last night. I camped there…

After the first storm ~ 6:30, there were breaks of sun and drizzle intermixed with torrential downpours and lightning. I really doubt they could have kept the track usable for long,

  5. It was a great call and Barry is right. It was miserable all evening and damp. Racing was not an option. I’d like to know if the teams would have preferred to pull the plug in the afternoon when that massive line of storms could be seen clearly heading east? They have the most to lose with the cost of transporting the cars and all the logistics.

More than once, I’ve been halfway there and gotten the cancellation text with plenty of time to make other plans.

  7. i didn’t know about the rain out notification thanks Barry

  8. Was it last year or the year before Stafford had very few events cancelled by rain. It was amazing. This seems to be the opposite. We’re in a cycle and once again showers and rain are predicted for this Friday. I wonder if this will help the Speedbowl? I know I’d be heading there if it weren’t so far away.

…… and even next Friday Doug.
