MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Doug Coby started his quest for a fifth straight and sixth overall NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship at the top of the speed charts on Saturday.
The Milford, Connecticut, driver paced the only practice session for teams prior to the season-opening Performance Plus 150 presented by Safety Kleen at Myrtle Beach Speedway.
Coby’s time of 18.897 seconds (97.341 mph) around the half-mile oval behind the wheel of the No. 2 Mayhew Tools Chevrolet came on the third of his 60 circuits.
The 38-year-old has won the last four Whelen Modified Tour championships, but in his only start at Myrtle Beach, he finished 13th last season.
Justin Bonsignore, who switched to LFR Chassis over the offseason, was second fastest in the session with a time of 19.981 seconds (96.932 mph).
Eric Goodale was third with a time of 20.077 seconds (96.469 mph), followed by Matt Hirschman, who was fourth.
Rob Summers, who won the pole award for the Performance Plus 150 in 2017, rounded out the top five.
Dave Sapienza was sixth, followed by Kyle Bonsignore, Craig Lutz, Burt Myers and Timmy Solomito.
NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams return to the track for qualifying at 4 p.m.
The Performance Plus 150 presented by Safety Kleen is scheduled to take the green flag at 5:35 p.m., and will air on NBCSN on Wednesday, March 21, at 6 p.m.

I wonder what happened? 🤔
You wouldn’t know what happens during a race because you’ve never raced. The only wrenches you’ve touched are the ones you put in a bag while working as Sears. You might want to look at the Sears stock. Not looking good. Might want to fill out a app at McDonlads.
Oh Ricky, there’s so much you don’t know…
