Smoking Show: Jon McKennedy Comes From Deep For Tri-Track Open Mod Win At Star Speedway

EPPING, N.H. – Wrong places, wrong times, wrecked race cars.

That’s pretty much been the theme of the 2021 season for Jon McKennedy going back to New Smyrna  Speedway in February.

Saturday McKennedy used a home track visit to get the frustrations of a rough start out in the perfect way.

McKennedy, of Chelmsford, Mass., came back from the consolation race and drove from deep in the field to win the 100-lap Tri-Track Open Modified Series Prelude to the SBM at Star Speedway.

McKennedy, who got his start in a racing in a Strictly Stock at Star in 2001, treated the hometown fans after the win to wild smoky donut show in turn three that helped him to let go of the frustration to that have dogged him this season.

“I’ve had a tough year to start,” McKennedy said. “… I just wanted to do some donuts. I wanted to keep going. That’s what my car owner [Tim Lepine] wanted. He told me if I won to burn it up and that’s what I did.”

Matt Swanson of Acton, Mass. was second and Chris Pasteryak of Lisbon third. It was McKennedy’s second career Tri-Track Open Modified Series victory, with his first coming at Star in 2014.

An issue in his heat race forced McKennedy, the 2014 Tri-Track Open Modified Series champion, to the consolation event and landed him with a 24th starting spot in the 28-car field.

But McKennedy hit the quarter-mile bullring for the feature brimming with confidence.

“We’ve started off this year so bad,” said McKennedy, who competes for Lepine in Open type events and with Tommy Baldwin Racing on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. “We’ve had some great cars and we’ve tore up a lot of cars this year. Just wrong places at the wrong times. And it started that way in our heat race today. We tore the left front off, wrong place wrong time. But I told the guys before the race, if we don’t get wrecked we will win. With me starting 24th they kind of looked at me funny. I just knew I had the feel I needed in the car.”

McKennedy was up to fifth for a lap 51 restart was third behind Chase Dowling and Pasteryak by lap 65. Dowling pitted under caution, putting Pasteryak out front. On the ensuing restart McKennedy was able to power around Pasteryak for the lead and stay there the rest of the way.

Swanson was able to close some on McKennedy with about ten laps left, but McKennedy maneuvered through lapped traffic over the final eight laps to get away.

“It seemed like we had a monkey on our back,” McKennedy said. “It feels so great to get a Modified win here again. It was a great race, great competition, it just feels awesome. Big thanks to my guys, they worked their asses off today.”

Swanson had his third consecutive second place in a Tri-Track Open Modified Series event at Star, which is his home track like McKennedy.

“It’s really driving me kind of crazy here,” Swanson said. “I’m starting to lose sleep over it. But the sleep I’m losing is time we’re spending at the race car shop making these cars better. My guys brought the car to win today and I didn’t bring it to victory lane. I just needed to be able to navigate traffic better and Jon just has such amazing car control and he made it through a lot better than I did. We’ll just keep doing what we’re doing because obviously what we’re doing is right.”

Swanson’s hopes are buoyed for the division’s return to Star on July 24.

“I was joking with my guys that we’ll just leave this race car on the trailer and come back [in July] and just run the same thing,” Swanson said, “But it all just just goes to my guys. They’ve worked their asses off this year and it’s paying off.”

Pasteryak, who has struggled previously at Star, beemed over the podium finish.

“It’s way better than blowing the motor or getting a flat on lap five,” Pasteryak said. “ … It’s great. Normally I leave Star dragging the right front tire with me into the pits so this is really good. We were close, but were obviously weren’t nearly as good as [McKennedy], and Swanson was a little bit better. But we were good enough to get up to sixth and [crew chief Ben Althen] made the call to pit and it all worked out. It was the right kind of race to be a little free and have track position.”

  1. Awesome! Congrats to John and Tommy on their win! They needed this bad!

  2. Is this owner named Tommy too

  3. knuckles mahoney says

The 8 was being black flagged for multiple laps, is the current finish correct?

  4. Knuckles,
I think you’re thinking of the 00 when it comes to being black-flagged for multiple laps. He pulled off the track after 80 laps.

  5. What happened to Money Matt? He was up to 4th

  6. Steve,
Heard there was an ignition wire issue. Don’t have confirmation on that.

  7. knuckles mahoney says

Thanks for clarifying Shawn. Thought it was the 8. Wondered why the 00 pulled off.

  8. Knuckles,
I could see spray coming off his car for about four laps before they even black flagged him and I was on the roof. Didn’t look good.

  9. See this is why Hirschman not getting a seat in an SRX race is not putting the most qualified tour modified driver in the series. The 79 was a new Gen 2 LFR car with Bob Breneau power and the 60 was still the class of the field.
I’m no strategerist but how do you win one of there TTOMS shorties? Tell you what, if you’ve got a fast car you might want to follow the 60 playbook.
What was Dowling thinking. Seriously pitting on lap 64. It’s a proven losing strategy in these races that’s fine for most cars except the fastest with a chance to win which the 9ct was.
A tale of strategies. Lap 32 caution for the Hinkley spin. 75, 3, 79, 06, 60 pit and come out 5, 7, 13, 20 & 23 respectively. Those are the cars that eventually qualified for the last 35 lap shootout. As most leaders except Dowling pit at the lap 50 caution for Bleau the eventual players move up as the leaders pit; 75-9 to 3, 3-10 to 4, 79- 13 to 5, 06 -16 to 11 and the 60- 17 to 7. The only car that pitted on lap 50 that could have been a contender was the Paige 00 that as we saw had a fluid leak issue.
Basically cruising from lap 50 to around 64 a caution and that’s when the real race starts with the cars that were fast and smart. That would not include the 9ct that for some strange reason has raced in but never has watched the strategy that wins these races.
Hirschman is flying passing the 3 on the outside with no problem at all and demonstrating the ideal of short track racing. Clearly the fastest car on the track it probably would have come down to Hirschman trying to get by McKennedy for the win and who knows how that would have played out.
Hinckley gets it. He often pits at the same time Hirschman does. Would have had a nice 6th place finish but faded at the end.
Hirschman will win the Tri Track championship and win whatever he wins of the remaining races. He’s still one of the smartest guys on the track with the fastest car but this just shows there is less room for error then in the past. That 79 car showed up brand spanking new with great power and the full resources of Rob Fuller and LFR as if it were a NWMT race and that is not something that has typically happened for this series of grass roots race teams. The field now-a-days is stacked more then a room full of 1960’s era pinups so buckle up Matt you’re going to need to avoid whatever that was that cost you a shot at this one.

  10. The 9 gave it away. You can’t pit that late. The 9 would have won by staying out.

Enough of the Saturday afternoon races. They don’t draw. The heat didn’t help but smallish crowd.
The track owners son threw TJ Bleau out of the race after a verbal altercation while TJ was still in the car. I’m curious as to what authority he has to do that? He wasn’t wearing a headset so there was no communication with race control. The kid had to be restained in fact. Looked like a punk move. Bad look for the race organization.

  11. Another great Tri Track race and congrats to Jon. I would almost rather see this race be 150 laps OR 100 laps but you can’t pit though. The strategy killed a solid finish for some. The 06MA seemed a bit off all day and that’s a head scratcher. Glad to see JB and the 00 showing some solid speed. I wish a few others like Sap, Lutz and Goodale would join in on the fun, maybe in July. This series has the potential to be better than the WMT if it isn’t already.

  12. Oh well. Lots of big names that are expected to crowd the top 5 and top 10 just weren’t there. They all missed the set up?

Silk was not a major contender and hung on to P5. Williams, Pitkat, Rameau, Hinkley, Hirschman, Zachem, Dowling, Barrett, Nocella and others were nowhere to be found. That’s nine hi-po cars right there out of contention.

    Weird race.

  13. Suitcase Jake says

Well Well , there it is A Win For McKennedy!! As Stated last week He was way overdue… Too talented a Driver to not be in Victory Lane!!! Great Job !’ !! Hopefully this will get Him on a Hot streak and a Tour Win in 2021

  14. 60 class of the field?? Come on man. The 79 was hands down the best car. I had a scanner on and he was telling his spotter that he was running 80%. Doug, is the support of Rob Fuller a bad thing? Why can’t that happen at these races? That is a brand new team with little or no experience that wanted him at the first couple races so that’s what he did. Seems to me this is a good thing for competition. I’m confused Doug.

  15. Fast Eddie says

Glad to see McKennedy win one! I think the early caution messed up a lot of team strategies. I’d bet Dowling’s idea was to get as many cars a lap down as possible and having a typical mid-race caution when most of the teams would pit at the same time and the remaining lead cap cars would decide the winner. A few “hitters” started in the back from the consi, most still hanging back in the beginning, short-pitted and ended up in the front.

  16. Jim,
The track owner’s son DID NOT throw TJ Bleau out of the race. The Tri-Track Open Modified Series officials parked TJ Bleau and he disregarded their directive to park and attempted to go back out on the track. The track official who got involved was trying to help series officials from keeping Bleau from going back on track after he was thrown out of the event.

Tri track race during the daylight? Dumb

  18. Just Me - The Original says

@🌈🦄2020 says – The timing worked for the competitors, they were able to hit the road at a decent time.

  19. Easy there Dale that wasn’t my point. Rob Fuller can spend all his time building and setting to Tri Track cars as far as I’m concerned. My point was that the 79 was the newest and best everything with one of the best drivers piloting it yet the 60 turned in a lap 3 tenths faster then the 79. The 60 turned in a faster lap in the Consi then the 79 did all afternoon.
I’m pretty well convinced you can’t appreciate these Tri Track races unless they are viewed twice. The first to get an overview and enjoy the race and the second to appreciate the strategy each team employed and how it helped or hurt them.
McKennedy was the best because he had the best strategy pitting early as did all the eventual top finishers and won the race. Hirschman in my view was the class of the field. The replay shows exactly how fast he was gobbling up cars including blowing by Swanson on the outside with his strategy working to perfection. No shoulda/woulda/coulda he spun and failed and the rest is conjecture but the the 60 when it wanted to was the fastest car and by a lot. His act is so old even the announcers know when he’s putzing and when it’s go time. My goodness they think he’s a threat when he’s running around in 20th and he is.
McKennedy, Bonsignor, Silk, Hirschman, Swanson, Pasteryak, Pitkat, Nocella, Dowling, the 25, Rameau etc, etc, etc. Loaded, absolutely loaded which makes the 4th by Sesely and 6th by McDermott all the more impressive. Oh and Hirschman’s protege Robie who was in the mix the entire race.
What more could you ask for in a tour type modified race?

  20. 12.538 vs 12.552 were the two fastest laps of the day. The 60 and 79, that’s a difference of .014 seconds. So not sure where you get your numbers from since this is on race monitor. If you are talking about race laps, posting the fastest laps at the beginning of a race means nothing in a 100 lapper.

  21. NH Modfan says

I spoke to the Star owner the day before the race while buying tickets. I was told he wanted the teams to be able to get an earlier start on their way back home because he knew many of them had long rides. I kind of liked the idea. The temperatures on Saturday were much higher than the NH average at this time of year. I don’t think we have been near that mark in 2021. Overall I thought the race was really good. Lots of good cars. The only thing I wished was better was some of the rulings in the heat races. I thought a couple of rulings were inconsistent. I saw the 7 (Vigeant) put to the back for contact with (66 Kochenash) but in another heat 06 (Rameau) kept his spot when he took out 60 (Shaw). Again good show, can’t wait for Seekonk.

  22. Doug,
You might need a new stop watch sir. The 60 was .02 faster than the 79. That’s 2 one hundredths…not 2 tenths. Judging speed in a consi where you are just trying to make the main feature is odd don’t ya think? Judge cars by how they finished in the race. It takes more than a fast car to win a race. Pit strategy, pit crew, spotter and luck all play a role. McKennedy will be the 60 cars worst nightmare if they run all the races in this series. Not sure if Fuller is a full time fixture or just a boost at the beginning but what they did at Thompson prior to the wreck and at Star will be tough to beat. Change my mind.

  24. First can we agree that a definitive data point for the true average race speed winner either doesn’t exist or is too complex to interpret so we make simpler observations.
The popular one of those that disagree with my conclusion is the practice time speed and if that’s your measure that’s fine. My thinking is that practice times are an indicator but they are on the freshest of tires. My view times generated in competition have greater value with the feature having the highest value since all the cars are on worn tires to a greater or lesser extent by that time.
I go right to race monitor and click on the icon in the upper right corner that converts running order to lap speed. In the feature Hirschman turned in his best lap on lap 11 at 12.651, McDermott second at 12.832 on lap 6 and McKennedy 12.925 also on lap 6. My observation in the Consi was only to show how quick the 60 was in a race he had no reason to try to turn fast laps.
I completely agree that a fast lap early or at any point is not an indication of average speed. I’ve always gone by the premise that it has value because it shows the greatest potential and that on average all cars speeds degrade in relationship to each other. Monitoring lap speeds constantly in virtually every race I view the fast lap theory has held up well in prediction what cars will eventually end up in front at the end of a race.
Coming out of the caution around lap 50 when the cars that pitted early made the jump to the front behind Dowling, Hirschman on the restart was back around 8th. After they get going he then proceeds to knock off the 16, 3 and 18 running the outside can you believe it. As noted by the announcer that stated the big red 60 knocking cars off at will or something to that affect. . So at that point it’s McKennedy 3 and Hirschman 4 and knowing those two drivers in great cars I’m thinking this thing is going to end up in a bare knuckle brawl between the 79 and 60 for the win. Hirschman goes into conservation mode watching McKennedy pull away, spins and the much anticipated ending is no more.
Reviewing the video yet again I’m seeing a contrast of styles both among the best in tour type modifieds today. McKennedy every bit the tactician conserving tire and passing cars at the right time but steady. Hirschman more hurky jerking being a putz conserving tires and waiting for the last round of pitting then turning on the after burners.
So how do I come to the conclusion that the 60 was the class of the field. Essentially it’s combining the feature fast lap speed to the visual of the 60 passing three cars on the outside to get to the 79 in the blink of an eye at a critical point in the race. That’s may not be completely water tight but it surely is capable of holding some water.

That is a clear datapoint indicating that Doug is a complete stupididiotmoron, totally incapable of understanding simple, primitive data like lap times. Data is data.

The other indicator is that he has asked several questions and never used a ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

If a person is competent, gathering, reading and understanding the data is natural. For Doug, it is a huge challenge, and he never gets there.

A coarse sieve can hold more water than your analyses and conclusions.

Qualifying, heat racing, and Main racing are three different objectives, with three different tactics and strategies. Lap times are incomparable.

  36. 🌈🦄2020, read the damn thread. Doug got called out and gang spanked. His attempt at playing statistician did not work. His attempt at putting his spin on statistics did not work. Insipid Cybil got called out by others than myself, and got gang spanked.

Just wait… he’s seething and preparing gigantic posts from WeldingWonders.

I see how you can be confused. “00” looks like an “8” that fell down, or an “8” looks like a “00” that stood up.

  38. Earl wrote, “Doug, I meant my comment respectfully, no disrespect intended.”

    I agree.

Yes Doug (aka: Insipid Cybil, RickyinMass, WeldingWonders, et al.), I too meant my comments in the utmost respectful way, no disrespect intended whenever I point out the idiocy and errors in your posts.

    I’m only here to help.

  39. It was a great chat for a while. Three solid citizens of RaceDayCt making the same point noticing nuances of what’s said and responding respectfully so what more can you ask for. Especially Just Me the original who is always on point with good information. For my part I responded earnestly explaining my logic about lap times I’m at fault for not defining in my opening. Clearly lap time differentials under competition are as valid as practice times even if it’s not your particular gauge to judge relative performance. The Hirschman/McKennedy debate a good one between two very capable and experienced racers a casualty of the nonsense as well.
Earl ended up blowing up the constructive back and forth but I don’t think that was the intent. Well timed chop busting was and it hit the mark as usual. Karma was visited on Earl in the Hendrix faux pas with no one taking a cheap shot which was refreshing to see.
I’m disappointed the thread went south and wish the guys that made the original observations had followed up but know it’s tough while a dumpster fire is raging. I don’t view this forum as a playground populated by children looking to divide up into sides to taunt each other although it does seem that way at times.
The good news is that there is always a next time to try to be better and more on point without the nonsense.

  40. Things were fine until Doug went all Dougie, and then he got himself slapped silly.

    🙃 😜 🤪 😛 😝

    As usual.
