Doug Coby is set to compete in the Tri Track Open Modified Series race at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday, June 30, looking to capture a $10,000 check in Speed51 Modified Madness.

Coby, who is coming off his impressive month of June, which included a victory in the inaugural SRX Series race at Stafford and a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win at Riverhead Raceway, will look to become the first four-time winner of the prestigious race.

Coby’s previous victories were in 2011, 2013 and 2016 — driving for two different car owners — and in three different chassis — but this time, he returns to Seekonk for the first time as owner/driver with Doug Coby Racing. Coby also has victories at Seekonk behind the wheel of a NEMA Midge and two wins in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action, with his most recent coming in 2019.

He looks forward to racing with Matt Hirschman and the rest of the talented field of over 40 competitors, while chasing the check and trophy. Hirschman and Coby are the only multiple-time winners of Open Wheel Wednesday at Seekonk — both with three. Coby wants to be the first one to get four.

“Matt is just so good at these types of races and it’s always an extra bonus when I can race him and beat him in any open-modified race,” Coby said. “These races are tough. Matt always plays his cards the right way, and I think it’s cool that both of us have won it three times. We both want to be the first one to get four. Seekonk and I seem to get along well now — my first few times racing there, we didn’t get along. But I learned how to drive the track and I think statistically, it’s probably my best track. I like grinding it out, lap-after-lap, side-by-side with other drivers, trying to outsmart them by a foot. It’s cool.”

One of Coby’s major sponsors, Reynolds Auto Wrecking, will be in attendance for the race with a large number of supporters, as they are located close to the track. Doug Coby Racing wishes to thank all sponsors, supporters and team members to make this effort possible.

Coby and the rest of the Tri Track Open Modified Series teams will practice from 3:45-4:45 p.m., with qualifying heat races set to go green at 6:30 p.m. Following qualifying heats, Tri Track will run consi races and the 100-lap, $10,000 to win feature event. The race will also be joined by a 50-lap special for the NEMA Lites and a 40-lap race from the 350 SMAC Supermodified Series.

  1. Phil Moran has found some good stuff in getting a car to run better on the bullrings… maybe he can prevail on Wednesday.

  3. I wonder if Coby will use his Tour Spec motor, or if he’s got a built motor to run. According to RYR those Spec motors only produce about 600 hp and 500 ft.lb. of torque. A good built motor can approach 800 hp and about 575 ft.lb. of torque.con a bullring like Seekonk the more torque the better. The upside of the spec motor is according to RYR it only weighs 450 lbs.,far lighter than a built motor.

  4. So Doug, where do you usually sit at Seekonk?

  5. Coby, Coby,Coby. He’s the cat’s whiskers these days isn’t he? Rolling into Seekonk with all that success as a driver and tiny track success as well.
That said the devil’s advocate view. The 10 team is purpose built for NWMT rules, spec dominated and a fish out of water in the wide open Tri Track series. This isn’t 2011, 2013 or 2016 when he won before with a NWMT cars that were superior to the field.
Jake the Quake is unabashedly hyperbolic with his race cheerleading and Seekonk in his wheelhouse but he can’t be hyperbolic for this field of cars. You might argue that the Tri Track field of cars at Stafford last year under special circumstances was better but only in numbers. This field of cars may very well prove to be the most high powered, star studded field of cars this year or in years for that matter. On a small, quirky track that takes a special kind of car to win.
The Riverhead dominance was eye popping. Winning in the SRX race with all those high powered names sublime. The Coby train surely won’t go off the rails at Seekonk but in my view it will encounter a slight delay before resuming at the next NWMT event.
Wow it’s race day and Hirschman can’t seem to get out of the giant shadow cast by Coby and to a lesser degree Preece. We’ll see how that works out.

  6. I hope Phil Moran is on his A-game today, that is an incredible line up.

But let’s be real… it will be a race between: McKennedy, JBon, Kobe, Silk, Hirschman, Barrett, Preece, Swanson, Dowling, Williams and Nocella.

It’s gonna be crowded, there will be carnage. Most of these drivers will occupy the top 10, if they survive. It is possible, but extremely unlikely, that anyone other than one of these drivers will take P1.

Will Hirschman resume the landscaping activities? Time will tell. I do hope he wears his valve stem caps.

Itty-bitty chance of rain through the evening. 🤞

  7. Well Doug, This is my top 5 , Lets see who is Hyperbolic, 1. McKennedy 2. Hirschman 3. Silk 4. Coby 5. Williams with Nocella as my DARK HORSE…….for upset Winner… Feel free MEN and Ladies of RDConn,,,,,…… to list your top 5 & your DARK HORSE upset WINNER !!!!!!!!!

  8. Okay Suitcase Jake, here’s my guess…

    1. Preece
    2. Hirschman
    3. Swanson
    4. McKennedy
    5. JBon

    Dark Horse: Dowling

  9. I was referring to your post in another thread Jake with admiration. Fired me up. I also like your picks. That 79 has already proven to be fast and especially on the shorter track. Hirschman….well he’s Hirschman so he won’t be far from the front at the end.
For the dark horse I’ll take Chick Stockwell.
