Mo Money: Matt Hirschman Scores Big Payday In Tri-Track Open Mod Event At Star Speedway

EPPING, N.H. – When you’re a race car driver and your nickname is “Money Matt”, it goes without saying that you probably know the feeling of winning big paying races.

But Saturday at Star Speedway even had “Money Matt” in awe of his payday.

Matt Hirschman put on a driving clinic on the way to winning the Tri-Track Open Modified Series SBM 125 Saturday at Star Speedway. The victory earned the Northampton, Pa. driver more than $14,000 in purse money and bonuses.

“I’ve done this race enough and I’ve learned how to win this race and I’ve learned how to lose it before,” Hirschman said. “Everything really fell into place well. This is going to be one of the best days we’ve ever had and we’ve had a lot of really good one’s, even here. But I’m talking in my career and that’s thanks to Star Speedway and [track owner] Bob Webber for putting up the money that even second place is going to have a great day.”

Jon McKennedy of Chelmsford, Mass. was second and Chase Dowling of Roxbury third.

“This has been a great race for my career and this is probably going to top them all,” Hirschman said. “It’s just incredible for me and my team and what this means to an owner and driver.”

Hirschman started on the pole and led the event until caution flew on lap 79 and he headed to the pits. He restarted the event 14th and put on a show marching to the front. Though the show nearly came to an abrupt halt when on lap 85 when he ended up going through the grass after trying to make a pass for 12th going into turn three.

“My guys were great,” Hirschman said. “They had a flawless pit stop. The car performed great. The racing was good. One little scare on the backstretch. … It was a career day.”

Hirschman was up to seventh on lap 89. On lap 95 he passed Ronnie Williams for fifth and two laps later went by Justin Bonsignore for fourth. On lap 103 Hirschman passed Matt Swanson for third and then on lap 109 he used a diving move under turn Dowling in turn one to go to second.

On lap 112 Hirschman went under McKennedy for the lead through turns one and two. Hirschman was able to defend against McKennedy’s charges on three late restarts.

“It was a good run,” said McKennedy, who had pitted on lap 51. “As far as where we were at with everyone else with the tire strategy, I thought we had the best car. Matt just pitted later than everyone and I think he had on a 30-lap newer tire. That was the difference. Matt’s a good driver. They’ve got a good setup. Between that and the newer tire I knew I was going to have my hands full. … We’ll take second. Still a good run.”

Dowling came out on top of a late battle for position with Williams.

“We don’t want worry about [Williams], Dowling said. “We finished third, he finished, I don’t know where. Congrats to Matt Hirschman. They were really good. We were really good in the daytime. Just got a little too free there [at night].”

Comments

  1. He sure knows how to get it done

  2. Jimmy King says

Lap leader $$$ led to an extremely large payday for Hirschman. Could that be the solution for the “boring” racing at Loudon? Would that incentive to lead laps lead to better racing?

  3. Top 5 Pick’em Pool Results >>>>>
    1st. Doug with 9-pts
    2nd. Earl with 8-pts
    3rd. NH MOD FAN 6-pts & CSG 6-pts

if I missed someone’s picks please let me know , Thanks to All who Played
you get 3 points for Winning pick in your Top Five Only… Dark Horse is 5-pts Maximum
Doug ended up Winning because he also got the 2-pts for most Top 5 Picks with 4 out of five
We will do this again, this time with Amended Rules for Dark Horse Picks … Stay tuned …

  4. Matt “The Bullring Specialist” Hirschman.

MH is always THE ODDS ON FAVORITE at these events, everyone else is racing for second. It is certainly NO SURPRISE when MH wins one of these.

  5. He really earned that win,I didn’t think no one would catch the 79,Matty really put on a show.Nice purse for these guys. One of the best around. What did Preece win at NH

  6. What happened to Preece and Swanson?

Preece went in for a pit stop and went backwards. Was Swanson punted?

  7. Yeah, but was the 60 running valve stem caps?

  8. Darealgoodfella,
Swanson had a mechanical issue just before the finish while running fourth.

  9. Unbiased says

Absolute clinic by the 60. Late cautions helped him get back through the field and he drove away. 79 knew he took tires early and probably would have held on if he could have stretched it out and the last 25 laps or so had stayed green. All in all seemed like the three best cars were on the podium. No bump and runs or late race antics either, 60 drove to the front and showed some dominance. Like him or not Hirshman shows up prepared gets the job done. Enough of this series is better or worse. No matter where he goes or who he races he is competitive, and I can’t recall him ever loosing a race due to mechanical failure. All speaks to preparation and hard work.

  10. You’re going to run into more problems with the current challenge rules with regard to Tri Track. First the dark horse issue now well covered is too subjective no matter how you modify it. Second adding 2 points for the person getting the most top 5 drivers in order double rewards that component of the challenge.
I’m still going to run my system for comparison.

1 point to anyone picking the winner.
1 point to any person identifying the most drivers appearing in the top five in any order.
1 point for the person getting the most drivers in order of finish correctly. (3 in order 2,4&5 beats 1 & 2)
    No dark horse pick scored.

In this challenge CSG, NH Mod fan and myself would get a point for picking the winner.
I would get the point for identifying the most drivers in the top 5
CSG and myself would tie for getting the most drivers in order.
Score for the finalists would be 3 to 2 to 1. No dark horse controversy involved at all.

With the exception of WeldingWonders and Earl that got into the top tier via the unpopular Hirschman dark horse pick the results come out the same without the controversy.

  11. Anyone know why cipriano was not in the 50c? It was a nice article, but I guess an extenuating circumstance must have reared its head.

  12. Bobf,
It was posted by the team recently that a Joey contracted COVID-19 recently and is recovering.

  13. Fast Eddie says

First off congrats to Matt and the #60 team! There were more than a few times on track he looked like he had an extra gear no one else had. No doubt due to the expertise of the work in the shop. Obviously they are masters at setting up the car, particularly at Star. Every restart, and I mean EVERY restart, Matt was able to get a HUGE 3-4 car holeshot at the green. Other teams need to figure out how he does that ALL THE TIME. He’s very talented driver, no doubt, but there may be something else going on other teams are overlooking. I’m not talking cheating, but maybe something to do with throttle linkage combined with his expertise on restarts that makes it happen. A wild guess would be longer pedal travel with the right tension would make it easier to go partial throttle to not spin the tires. I saw a few times when he was testing the grip coming out of turn 2 on the cautions (a stab of the throttle off the corner). Or maybe the eagle eye of his spotter? The flagman’s arm is going to move before the flag. saying “Green” to the driver then might have the timing for car movement closer to the flag movement. A tenth of a second can make a big difference on the track. Nothing to back up any of these thoughts, just some crazy racefan observations…

  14. Doug , Again , I staggered the points to eliminate lots of ties for the Top Finishers, It worked as designed, The Winner had 9, Second had 8, Third had 6, The Dark Horse is worth 5 points and gives those a shot at the Win if they don’t have much Luck with their Top 5 Picks. .. Too keep them Interested add some excitement for a Longer Shot Winner. You can now see the System worked well , [ you won ] So if you would please drop your continued Dark Horse talk it would be great for all parties. I tried to include you in the points and administration of the pool, But you said ” Jake your on your OWN ” so Now that I am on my own trying to Design and improve the pool for all involved. Like I said it will improve as we go along , good or bad we will learn from it and make adjustment’s as we go along, Oh by the way, I did listen to Input and used your idea for the TIE BREAKER , So either play and have fun or don’t it’s your call , Oh and you Won Without even picking the ” Dark Horse ” so go figure…

  15. Shawn;
    Thank you for that.
I hope he has a speedy recovery.

  16. Congrats on winning the pool Doug!

  17. Suitcase Jake, Doug did indeed employ the Dark Horse under his other screen name, WeldingWonders.

Doug = WeldingWonders = same idiot.

I like the fun factor with the Dark Horse, but it will take careful wordsmithing and logic to craft the definition of the option to prevent sleaze moves like Earl. To get a perspective, how often do we read here at RaceDayCT about a driver winning their first race? Or an upset winner? That’s how rare it happens. And that also goes to show how sleazey and Earlbaggery it is to pick Hirschman for a Dark Horse.

So that Earlbaggery can not continue, here are a couple ideas, if only to help get the thinking going, and hopefully seed better ideas:

The following can allow an entry to be eligible for the Dark Horse option:

    1. Has not won a race in the subject series in 5 years, or any other series if this is the first race in a new series for the driver.

    2. Is outside the Top 10 in points at race time and winless in the season.

    3. Has not finished in the top 10 in points in any series the last 5 years.

    4. Has never won a championship in any series in the last 10 years.

    5. Has not won a race in the subject series in the current season.

    6. The Commissioner may rule a Dark Horse pick ineligible for unforeseen conditions or Earlbaggery not covered by the above specifications.

Clearly some of the numbers may need tweaking, some may be too harsh or too lenient.

  18. Do we have a competition going here between Jake’s contest and mine? That would be pretty cool. I know I’d lose but I’m game if you are Jake.
I mentioned the problem with the dark horse twice and you ignored it. That’s fine it’s your rules and they seem to be very popular. As far as I’m concerned we can’t have enough of this. You awarded me a point for each driver I identified in the top 5, I got 4 to the next person at 3 and then you gave me 2 more for doing it. Am I complaining? It’s just is a flaw in my view.
I don’t see it staggered properly not at all at least with your system. Earl and WeldingWonders came in the second tier using a strategy you made available they were smart to use that was flawed. It was never a loophole it was hole you could drive a truck through, I told you about it and you did nothing. Now Earl and WeldingWonders have to take heat for being smart and that’s not right.
No I won’t stop mentioning the dark horse.. It’s popular but ridiculous in my view. It’s an outlier at best, a curiosity. You want to award good intent lets forget all this and give Fast Eddie the award for picking Hinckley to win. That’s as good as it gets with regard to good intent for the spirit of the competition.
You’re welcome to the dark horse Jake in your contest but I am not obligated to share the same view nor follow your lead as much as I respect it.
The goal here first is to have some fun and secondly try to refine a pick’em system that is fare and balanced. Competition promotes improvement so lets have folks vote, share a pool of voters and see who can generate the fairest system. You’re a former on track competitor aren’t you Jake? I am too so lets go head to head. Worst case folks have two chances to win and how is that bad?
Lastly I will give you one additional advantage Jake. For the purpose of my scoring Darealgoodfella is suspended indefinitely for actions detrimental to the sport of auto racing. That makes him your primary supporter and you are welcome to him.
Let’s share an audience that makes picks, give them a couple of opportunities to win and have fun and see what happens. You’re still the commissioner Jake, I was the one that gave you that title and am your biggest fan. I’m just the MRS trying to get enough cars to make it a show against the big dog.

  19. Thanks Earl. Not for the win mention but for volunteering to be on the Darealgoodfella hit list. Near as I can figure I am the worst person in recorded history and you a distant second. Hope things are going well with the new life plan.

  20. Fast Ed : you are correct. But its not the linkage, So to speak it’s the Cam on the Carburetor. We can change the Cam so we can control how FAST or Slow the Throttle goes from shut to WIDE OPEN THROTTLE… Also We can run Scrubbers on the REAR AXLES drive Flanges , We can use Solid or Softer Rubber/Plastic to take some shock away from traction when Throttle goes from low to wide open quickly , like on a RESTART or Center of Corner and Corner Exit. You can see the Scrubbers in center of outside axle Hubs of drive flange. If you see a large Circle on end of it , that is scrubbers. . It softens the shock in drivetrain and helps to reduce tire spin … Some guys even run Rubber or Plastic Bushings on rear arms that hold rear end in car for same purposes…

  21. Rich Gourley says

Once again Matt Hirshman showed his true talents to the field, For a relatvely low buck operation he sure does get the job done with regularity. Congrats MH.

  22. Suitcase Jake, your system worked just fine, the people were deplorable, and that was to be expected. Now you must enact rules to protect the good people from the Earlbaggers. If the people behaved with a shred of decency, you wouldn’t have to do this. The points worked fine at reducing ties, the Dark Horse was indeed fun. 🤩

Perhaps the easiest thing to do is tell the players that they had better pick a Dark Horse with the spirit and intent of good, clean fun, or you will disregard entries that try to Earlbag.

  23. Speedbowl14 says

I’m surprised no one’s talking about Pitkat. Failed to qualify then bought a ride into the feature? What was with the duct-tape 6? Then he proceeded to crash, be crashed, or cause a crash literally 4 or 5 times in the feature. Spun coming to the checkered flag as well for good measure. Also kudos to the pure stock and 6shooter cars and drivers who raced excitingly, kept their cars moving after spins, and for the most part kept things green in divisions that you’d expect to be demolition derbys.

  24. Doug wrote, “I don’t see it staggered properly not at all at least with your system. Earl and WeldingWonders came in the second tier using a strategy you made available they were smart to use that was flawed. It was never a loophole it was hole you could drive a truck through, I told you about it and you did nothing. Now Earl and WeldingWonders have to take heat for being smart and that’s not right.”

Idiot. You still don’t know the difference between “smart” and “deplorable”. If it was a hole you could drive a truck through, which is far worse than a loop hole, then Suitcase Jake was being optimistic and trusting. Only deplorable, depraved, sleazebags would exploit such a HYUGE LOOP HOLE. That there are Earlbags out there that would exploit such a HYUGE LOOP HOLE is just DEPLORABLE.

    Smart ≠ deplorable

    Earlbaggery = deplorable

  25. Here’s the issue. Dadumbdumbs bigly huge ego can’t accept the fact that he has been beaten by a woman and then by the two people he hates most on this site, Doug and myself. He was outsmarted and out played so that makes him not as intelligent as he self proclaims he is.

This guy has been beaten so badly, and is so desperate to win so he can taunt everyone further, now the 😭 👶 wants to add 6 new rules to the game to give himself the opportunity to get a precious win.

This guy is seriously the saddest individual on the planet!

  26. Credit where credit is due. Darealgoodfella gets an at-a-boy for entering the rules discussion with a dark horse recommendation instead of throwing rotten tomatoes from the sidelines.
    Some observations:

    1. Has not won a race in the subject series in 5 years, or any other series if this is the first race in a new series for the driver.

That would disqualify Mike Willis and Todd Patnode. Lutz also would be disqualified and this year he clearly is not a favorite.

    2. Is outside the Top 10 in points at race time and winless in the season.

For this race disqualifies Hinckley, Sesely, Pitkat, Pasteryak, Swanson, Nocella. Or the “and” could be interpreted to simply exclude McKennedy in which case he’s already excluded.

    3. Has not finished in the top 10 in points in any series the last 5 years.

Disqualifies Bonsignor driving Jimmy Paiges 00. Also all the drivers in the MRS series that for Tri Track are not favorites at all. Also 2020 NWMT top 10 drivers Lutz, Swanson, Sapienza and Nocella. 2019 top 10 drivers Goodale, Emerling and Pasteryak. You get the idea.

    4. Has never won a championship in any series in the last 10 years

Disqualifies Willis, Nocella and Pitkat for winning the MRS series..

Preece has never won a Tri Track race and actually has struggled in many of the races yet these rules disqualify him. Jimmy Paige won with Dowling in 2019, he’s not a driver so I guess he’s still in. But Bonsignor is excluded although he has never won a Tri Race and the team of Paige/Bonsignor relatively new so why exclude them? Coby is excluded although he hasn’t raced in a Tri Track race since 2016 and would be driving a different car so could you not argue he could be considered a dark horse for the Seekonk race?

It’s a good effort but all this proves is that the devil is in the details and how difficult it is to quantify exactly who is and who is not to be considered as a dark horse. Darealgoodfella clearly self identifies himself as a superior racing mind yet near as I can see is struggling when actually taking responsibility for writing rules like we mere mortal. I don’t think it’s worth spit as a category and will never pick a dark horse but if you have it make is simple. Just prepare a list of drivers that are favorites and are not to be considered as dark horses. That may be reason for protest but at least it’s cut and dried.

We don’t have a season championship race but if we did CSG would be in the lead for picking one winner in the two races, identifying 3 drivers in each race in the top 5 and getting the order of finish most correct in the two races. In my view that’s the real test here consistently delivering accurate picks.

  27. Earlbag wrote,

    “Jake,

Just for clarification. The dark horse can or can’t be one of your top 5 picks?

Please let me know so I can make my picks. Thanks”

That is an example of outlandish, egregious depravity. Galactic Earlbaggery.

Earlbag, you were considering Hirschman for your Top 5 pick AND your Dark Horse pick. Absolute depravity.

And for another example of profound 🧐 depravity, there’s this gem from Doug:

“Common insults are rhetorical clubs wielded by unsophisticated thugs with limited vocabularies. The issuer seeking to establish some sort of superiority but as far as I’m concerned it simply shows a lack of education, training and upbringing.
For those that take pride in the amount they use common insults you are welcome to having them all. I strive to scrupulously avoid them.”

Doug, you can’t deal with numbers greater than 5. You’d never be able to count how many times you called someone a scumbag on these forums. You don’t strive at all.

  28. McKennedy had a good car, makes me wonder if he waited to take on tires that he would have had something for the 60.

  29. WeldingWonders says

“ hate me because I’m beautiful and smarter than you.
“And just a reminder, I was right, again.”
“See, I was right. Even Earl can finally get it.”
“wmass01013, you were correct when you addressed me as “genius”.
“Hey Doug, I was right again.”
Doug… you see that???? Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful, hate me because I’m beautiful and smarter than you.

  31. When I read your comments Darealgoodfella I see Ryan Fearn in the infield at Stafford pounding his hand against his car in rage for brake, disqualification and wreck issues.
You had the long list of dark horse picks that included obvious favorites in the Loudon race. You had this as well for Seekonk.

    June 30, 2021 at 1:39 pm
Okay Suitcase Jake, here’s my guess…
    1. Preece
    2. Hirschman
    3. Swanson
    4. McKennedy
    5. JBon
    Dark Horse: Dowling

Dowling breaks your rule number three.
That’s two occasions you had a choice and picked obvious favorites to Earl and WeldingWonders single time. All the very harsh things you said striking at the heart of a persons character must apply to you as well it would appear.
I suggest you put that clearly superior mind to work to recommend the drivers to be excluded from the Seekonk Tri Track race and I’ll even get you started with the qualified cars.

  32. Doug Dipwad, what part of …

“Clearly some of the numbers may need tweaking, some may be too harsh or too lenient.”

    … do you not understand?

And I opened with … “So that Earlbaggery can not continue, here are a couple ideas, if only to help get the thinking going, and hopefully seed better ideas:”

And if your little analysis can be trusted, which it can’t since you can’t do simple arithmetic and you had to correct yourself NUMEROUS times when tabulating prior results, indeed my rough cut worked quite well. Many drivers that have no place being a Dark Horse were eliminated.

And like I said, it was a first cut, the numbers may need tweaking, some may be too harsh or too lenient. And there may need for “and” and “or” criteria.

    How stupid are you?

Hinkley is 3rd place in points, if he doesn’t win it’s his own fault. He’s not a Dark Horse.

So because your stupid ideas were superseded by the superior schema developed by Suitcase Jake, you are all pissy and using a tomato 🍅 Gatling gun. Yep, right on schedule.

Doug, your schema was rife with undefined problems… you had extremely high probability of ties, and no real way to resolve them. That and the statistical odds of each outcome were wildly different with equal weighting. Stupid, stupid, stupid… I’ve met tree stumps that were smarter than you.

It may come down to a very simple solution… folks post their picks, and The Commissioner will cull entries that include what his office deems an Earlbag pick for the Dark Horse. That means pick at your own risk of being disqualified for that race game.

As it is right now, it is a pick-6 with one pick awarding 5 points. The hope was no Earlbaggery, but that was hoping for too much. The honor system didn’t work.

    WeldingWonders in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, …

  33. PICK”EM POOL / Dark Horse Pick ; Rules . Driver has NO Previous Wins in Series Races We are Picking. TRI – Track or Mod TOUR.. This Pick ” THE SPIRIT OF THIS PICK ” is for a LONG SHOT WINNER …. SO now the Dark Horse Pick , Worth 5 points is for a “FIRST TIME WINNER ” in Either Tour. … So if you have a Favorite Driver by All means Pick Him or Her Here .. First Time Winner … That Should be Easy enough … Simple … So if you do your HOMEWORK you may find a GOOD DRIVER who hasn’t picked up a Tour Win with one of the Series … There are many on here much better on the Computer than me , So I am sure they can produce a list of Drivers Available for Each Series that HAS NOT WON…. Hopefully We can now move on to having good clean pool Fun… Like I said adjustment’s will be made as we go, If needed. It’s new . let’s not kill it before it get’s legs , let it walk before it can Run…. Thanks to ALL Player’s … See you at Seekonk at PASS RACE ..!!!! 34. Fat Eddie says

Suitcase, easy rules, I say let them ride as is! Maybe change the name from Darkhorse to Wildcard but keep the present rules. Doug, congrats on the win! Earl, I gotta hand it to you with the irony of picking Hirschman as the wild card. Just like Hirschman does at the track, you examined the rules and figured out a way to legally work them to your advantage, well done! As for me, I gotta work on my picking skills!

Wow, what a typo! Make that Fast Eddie, although the typo is probably more accurate!

  36. Fast Eddie : Thank’s for the Laugh, Thank’s for your Support ,

  37. Thanks for the compliment Fast. Like the wild card idea.

  38. Jake, works for me, let it rip and let’s have at it.

  39. 😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝

Well, we go from Earlbag and Dougie Doodie picking Matt Hirshman for the Dark Horse, to the Dark Horse definition being explained as having never won, or a first time winner. That was pretty obvious to others.

Nice and simple, for simple minds.

Earl and Doug, you have no shame whatsoever. And yet you two are so proud of yourselves. So not smart.

    🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

Doug and all his other screen names are exploding. 🤯

  40. Same posts time after time, boring 🥱.

Take a long look in the mirror dadumbdumb and you will see the saddest individual on the planet like you do every day.

    Ready for your next spanking?

Don’t hate the player, hate the game you pathetic 😭 👶.

  41. Dadumbdumb writes;

“Hinkley is 3rd place in points, if he doesn’t win it’s his own fault. He’s not a Dark Horse.”

    Jake the commissioner writes;

“PICK”EM POOL / Dark Horse Pick ; Rules . Driver has NO Previous Wins in Series Races We are Picking. TRI – Track or Mod TOUR.. This Pick ” THE SPIRIT OF THIS PICK ” is for a LONG SHOT WINNER …. SO now the Dark Horse Pick , Worth 5 points is for a “FIRST TIME WINNER ” in Either Tour”

    Dadumbdumb looses again!

Nice try 😭 👶. Another spanking!

  42. Earl, the reason there are rules, and laws, are to prevent sleazebags like yourself from doing what you did.

The rules were changed because of you and your sleazebaggery.

The game was just fine if you and Doug didn’t do what you did. You two players ruined it for everyone else. You and your parents must be so proud. 🥲

  43. Earl, some people just don’t need rules, they have high moral standards. Then there’s you and Doug.

  44. OK , Wild Card Pick it will be Called … Pick’em Pool … WILD CARD PICK … FIRST TIME WINNER IN THE SERIES WE ARE PICKING… Thanks for the feedback … Wild Card has a nice RING to it …. !!

  47. I’m looking for 500…

Doug, if you stopped the cataloging, and multiple personality disorders, you might be able to go to a track sometime. Would that be a Wild Card (first time) occurrence?

    Welding Wonders in 10, 9, 8, 7, …

  48. Now here’s a funny one, Dadumbdumb writes;

“Earl, some people just don’t need rules, they have high moral standards. Then there’s you and Doug.”

Dadumbdumb insinuating he has high moral standards?

He doesn’t need rules? What good are rules if you don’t know how to interpret them? He has certainly proved that now hasn’t he!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂OMG, I’m laughing so hard I can’t catch my breath!
