Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby is no stranger to success in Open Modified competition. Coby is a three-time winner of Seekonk Speedway’s Open Wheel Wednesday, and this Wednesday, August 25, he looks to become the first four-time winner in the 16-year history of the $10,000 to win event.
Coby will drive the No. 10 Mayhew Tools/Reynolds Auto Wrecking entry in the Speed51.TV Modified Madness with the Tri Track Open Modified Series. The event was originally slated for June 30, but shortly after qualifying was complete on that night, a power outage in the area forced the postponement of the event to this week. With qualifying already complete, Coby will start in the seventh position after winning his qualifying heat and earning $300 in the Pepsi Challenge back in June.
Coby is coming off a fifth-place finish at Beech Ridge with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour last weekend. Veteran Matt Hirschman is the only other three-time winner of the event, and Coby knows that Hirschman will be one of his major challengers.
“I like this race and this car has been really good for us with pretty much a lock for the top-five everywhere we have been,” Coby said. “We have our strategy in advance, and we know when we ideally want to do things — but Matt is really good. I know I have won this race three times, and I have success at Seekonk, but he’s still the car to beat. We’re looking forward to it.”
The schedule includes practice from 5:30-6:10 p.m., followed by the drop of the green flag for the 100-lap feature around 7:30 p.m. The NEMA Lites and 350 SMAC Supermodifieds will also be in action.
All tickets and pit passes that were purchased for the original Wednesday, June 30, date, will be honored on Wednesday if the ticket holder still has them in their possession. Additional tickets will also be available at the track for purchase for those who couldn’t make it the first time. The race will also be live on Speed51.TV via PPV for those who can’t make it.
