Ron Silk and Justin Bonsignore put on a bruising, full-contact, seemingly no-holds barred battle at the front of the field for most of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Eddie Partridge 256 on Saturday at Riverhead Raceway.
Ultimately the battle for the lead ended on lap 242 when contact between the two left Bonsignore with a mangled left front suspension. Following the event there were some high level individuals involved with series and Tour Type Modified racing who said they believed NASCAR allowed Bonsignore and Silk to take the rough racing too far on Saturday and should have warned/penalized them earlier in the event to set a better tone. Today’s poll asks your thoughts on the matter. Should NASCAR have reigned in the battle between Silk and Bonsignore Saturday at Riverhead? Vote below.
Rubbing is racing and this isn’t the first time between these 2 and it won’t be the last you put them on a bull ring what do you expect them to play follow the leader hell no have at it boys
Asscar is like WE wrestling anything goes no one is held accountable for their actions, look how the 17 won the race at Watkins Glen bumper slamming the kid to win
Not at all the racing was hard aggressive nothing dirty that’s what it’s supposed to look like
What a silly question.
WHAT THE HELL DID BEUSCHER DO WRONG JUST ASSING?
No, hard racing!!
What a dumb polling question….
Andrew,
Why is it dumb? Explain.
Was this a race or a wrestling match? Both drivers are hugely skilled with the best equipment. I admire them both. But….come on…..what we saw was great entertainment, but where do you draw the line?
Justin realized the outside was faster for restarts, so Ron simply runs in so far towards the wall that Justin has to give up the lead. Neither driver made that mistake again. During racing laps it wasn’t merely rubbing….it was slamming to pass. Only the skill of Justin and Ron prevented them from wrecking.
This is not a way to build car counts. There are no penalties/accountabilities from NASCAR for actions during Tour races. I’m glad we kept our Riverhead mods in the garage and watching the wrestling…I mean the racing. At least Sap saved $45!
Hard racing. The old adage “race how you want to be raced” still applies. 51 hammers everybody on his way to the front. Fair enough. I don’t hear him complain when he’s also raced hard. Also, fair enough. 16 will give as good as he gets and when raced clean, he returns the favor.
The boys were just havin at it. Maybe you could call it punch counter punch racing. It’s a bull ring, what would anyone expect?
The 16 and 51 dueling on short tracks is best part of their product by far.
Because you are asking if bumping and banging needs to be stopped. It’s what makes this kind of racing fun. It was really to bad one guy got wrecked because it’s really entertaining. Used to happen all the time, we don’t need nascar making anymore rules….
Andrew,
“Bumping and banging” is one thing. In my opinion – and I believe it’s the opinion of quite a few other people around the series and Modified racing in general – that was not something you’d categorize as “bumping and banging” on Saturday night. That went far beyond being categorized as “bumping and banging”.
Well quite a few other people around modified racing and the series view it as normal bumping and banging for that track. What would you rather have put them both in the back of the pack? Down a lap? For many races those two bump and bang and both finish. If I wanted to see guys play nice, I’d just watch on Sundays….
Andrew,
I think we can agree to disagree. Outside of regulars at Bowman-Gray Stadium, I don’t think anyone who has been around Modified racing for any amount of time and doesn’t just go to the track for wrecks would characterize what happened Saturday at Riverhead as “normal bumping and banging”. I can tell you with almost 100 percent certainty that both drivers involved would tell you that was not “normal bumping and banging.”
