The Islip 300 closes out the year annually at Riverhead Raceway. It’s the time to put the racing season in the rearview.
Saturday at Riverhead Raceway though, the Islip 300 was also about looking to the future.
The future star power was on display at the end of the day at Riverhead.
Seventeen year old Chase Grennan, making his second Tour Type Modified start, won the pole and then backed that qualifying effort up by winning the Islip 300.
“I’ve never been so nervous in my life,” said Grennan, who held on to the lead through four restarts over the final 23 laps. “If it wasn’t for such a bad bad bad bad race car I would have had no shot out here. My brother worked his butt off on this thing. Two weeks we’ve been setting this thing up. He’s a genius everybody. My brother is the smartest person here and he proved it tonight. That was just a crazy race. I may be new to this stuff, but I’m not going to be pushed around. I had to stand my ground in a couple situations. But it’s the Islip 300 baby, you do what you’ve got to do.”
Dylan Slepian was second and Chris Rogers third.
Grennan passed Craig Lutz for the lead with 24 laps remaining and never trailed again, holding off Rogers over the four late restarts. Slepian got by Rogers for second place on lap 299.
“I’ve got to hand it to Chase, he didn’t put a wheel wrong all night long,” Slepian said. “… He’s a good kid. Good to see him hanging with Matt Hirschman, Craig Lutz and guys like that.”
