What’s Brewing: Dear Stan, I Meant To Write You Sooner But I Just Been Busy

Apparently people named Stan don’t like me. Sorry, just a reference to our recent punchy Quickcast.

In the words of the immortal Eminem: Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy.

So Wednesday evening I shared a post from NASCAR on the RaceDayCT Facebook page.

It was a post from NASCAR announcing details of the new NASCAR 25 game, which would include NASCAR’s three top tier national divisions and the ARCA Menards series. In my comment on the post I mentioned that it was unfortunate that the Whelen Modified Tour wasn’t included in the game and how that could have exposed the series some new fans. Not looking to stir up any sort of hornet’s nest, just a comment.

Well, then Stan came barreling into the comments section.

  1. What does the old TV show The Rifleman and Woody Pitkat have in common? Everyone loved Johnny Crawford, Mark on The Rifleman. Everyone loves Woody as well and might envy what he’s accomplished. Terrific driver, A to Z knowledge of what makes races cars tick, a hail fellow well met kind of guy but not at the cost of competitive fire. Builds bridges but not prone to burning them with a very broad skill set from trade skills to public relations to balancing it all with a beautiful wife and family. Johnny Crawford had a broad skills set as well during his lifetime one of which was a teen idol briefly with a number of hit records including this one give it a listen.

One of the bridges Mr. Pitkat built was with Stan Mertz, for my money one of the most feel good stories to be had in local racing. Out of his one horse barn Mr. Mertz perpetually under funded doing most of the work himself scratched out one of the most amazing runs I can recall in local racing for an underdog. Proving the whole is greater then the sum of it’s parts out of that little shop Stan carved together a grass roots team in the best spirit of short track racing and competed very successfully. First in an under powered SK in the MMTTS series then full powered thanks to Gunsmoke Stables with more success to follow. Pretty well encapsulated in the following video predictably superbly produced by Vault Productions tell me if this doesn’t capture the ideal of short track racing?

So it was disappointing to read Mr. Mertz taking cheap shots at RaceDayCt first delving into a personal insult then implying wealth being accumulated by some kind of nefarious relationship between RaceDayCt and the MMTTS. If there is any bitter feeling about coverage Mr. Mertz should recall that Stan Mertz Racing was the beneficiary of 15 articles in 2021 that appeared in the publication. I don’t see how carving out an on line publication and making it stick for over a decade is not having “a real life” according to Mr. Mertz when in one respect it’s much like what Stan Mertz Racing carved out in tour modifieds on his own. Stan’s little shop, Shawn’s home office. As for pocket lining having marketing partners is as critical as sponsors were to Stan Mertz Racing. Support from advertisers and those seeking a mutually beneficial arrangement have made non public news reporting of any sort possible since publishing began. Much like racing can’t happen without sponsorship.

I’ve watched that Vault Productions video 3 times over the years and it never fails to supply a jolt of positivity about what underdogs can accomplish. Mr Mertz clearly couldn’t assemble that group of guys giving up their own time without a healthy dose of charisma of his own that wasn’t on display in that bitter and ill informed post.

Next up, the MMTTS vs the NWMT by the numbers.
