STAFFORD – Nickolas Hovey won the battle, but it was Meghan Fuller dramatically winning the war.
Fuller scored a sixth place finish in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature to clinch his first SK Light Modified championship at Stafford.
Fuller, of Auburn, Mass., edged race winner Hovey by four points in the final standings for the division.
“I’m very very excited to bring this home for my team,” Fuller said. “They’ve worked so hard all year and I knew exactly what I needed to do coming into tonight and I got it done.”
Fuller, who is in her fifth season in the SK Light Modified division at Stafford, closed out the season with one win, six top-fives and 13 top-10’s in 17 starts.
“I was definitely nervous and a little bit nauseous all day,” Fuller said. “As soon as I got out there and I was driving I was fine. It was just under caution or under red or before the race I was a little bit nervous. But as soon as we got it done I couldn’t be happier.”
Fuller became the third female track champion in Stafford history, joining Shelly Perry (2006 SK Light Modified) and Alexandra Fearn (2021 Limited Late Model)
“It means a lot to us,” Fuller said. “It feels great to be able to be a female and be on top and be able to show the girls that we can do what the guys can do too. I know some of the guys don’t like racing against girls, but I really enjoy it and I think I’ve proven myself now.”
Hovey, of Chaplin, had a division leading six victories over 17 starts.
“It’s just, I tried as hard as I could there,” Hovey said. “I think we lost by a spot or two. That sucks. I probably won’t sleep for the next few weeks. There’s probably a couple dozen races where I could have at least found one spot.”
Robert Bloxsom III of Milford was second in the feature and Peter Bennett of Windsor was third and ended up third in the division standings.
Fuller was up to sixth on lap four with Hovey running ninth. With Ben Morrison leading and Matt Brewer in second the first caution flew on lap five.
Brewer went by Morrison for the lead on the lap five restart. Fuller got up to fourth on the restart and then to third on lap six.
Fuller just nearly avoided disaster on lap seven when Morrison got loose in second place went spinning in turn four. The incident dropped Fuller to fifth place with Hovey sitting ninth for the lap eight restart.
“My heart definitely stopped a little bit when I saw that,” Fuller said. “All I wanted to do was stay in the top-six tonight and I knew we were able to get it done and I knew that we had the car to do it.”
Brewer held the top spot on the lap eight restart. A huge wreck off of turn four involving about seven cars before the completion of lap eight brought out the red flag. Coming off of turn four Casey Vogt got sideways and Nick Anglace was sent flying over Vogt’s car and hard into the outside wall.
Brewer and Bennett went side-by-side for the ensuing restart. By lap nine Fuller was running fifth with Hovey in sixth. On lap 10 Hovey used a diving move into turn three to get under Fuller for fifth place.
At the front Bennet went by Brewer for the lead on lap 11. On lap 13 Hovey went by Bloxsom for fourth place. On lap 14 Hovey made it three-wide in turn three to leap frog to second place. Fuller fell back to sixth on the same lap.
On lap 18 Hovey made a diving move under Bennett into turn three, but Bennett defended the spot. Hovey made the move again in turn three on lap 19 and Hovey came off turn four with the lead.
